Plastic currency notes in India :     

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is planning to introduce plastic currency notes next year on a pilot basis and improve security features to defeat the efforts of counterfeiters. It also aims to set up a national bill payments system that could eliminate middlemen and bring in efficiencies.

The central bank floated a tender for plastic currency notes in January after years of deliberation. Depending on the trial, the notes should be introduced widely next year.

Aloke Kumar Banerjee, Director of Finance at ONGC believes switching to market-driven prices will be a big positive. He expects crude prices to remain around the USD 100 per barrel mark, unless there is an untoward surprise. Oil marketing companies have come into favour ever since the government signaled its intension to switch to market-linked soon, helped by a softening of global crude oil prices. “The decision of the government, which stands today, is reduction in diesel subsidy by 50 paise per month, which means, increase in prices by 50 paise. So, the logical conclusion is that as and when that is over, it will become market driven,” Finance secretary Arvind Mayaram said at an event organised by industry body Assocham. The Indian government, which used to force oil companies to sell automotive fuels steeply below cost, last year gave them the freedom to price petrol at a profit while initiating a 50-paisa monthly hike for diesel till prices reached breakeven – under pressure to cut its yearly Rs 65,000 crore fuel subsidy bill.

Adani keen to buy out NDTV for Rs 600 cr      

The growing buzz in the market is that the Adani Group, interested in buying out NDTV, has arrived at a valuation of Rs 600 crore (Rs 6 billion) for the news broadcaster.     

The current market capitalisation of NDTV is Rs 529 crore (Rs 5.29 billion), meaning Adani is willing to pay a premium of 13.4 per cent.

Sources familiar with the developments say though the bid value is short of the seller's expectation, a deal is likely to be finalised in the near future.

Reacting to the market buzz about a potential takeover, NDTV promoters had said last month that the company "'is constantly on the lookout for and in discussions with potential partners in various capacities to further its business."

The promoters of NDTV hold 61.45 per cent stake, while the public hold 38.55 per cent. NDTV shares closed at Rs 82.05 on Friday.

റിലയന്‍സ് പുതിയ റിഫൈനറി സ്ഥാപിക്കാന്‍ ഒരുങ്ങുന്നു

പ്രതിദിനം നാലു ലക്ഷം ബാരല്‍ എണ്ണ ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കാന്‍ ശേഷിയുള്ള പ്ളാന്‍റ് സ്ഥാപിക്കാനാണ് റിലയന്‍സ് ആലോചിക്കുന്നത്. ഇപ്പോള്‍ വിപണിയില്‍ സുലഭവും കുറഞ്ഞ നിരക്കിലും ലഭിക്കുന്ന കട്ടി കൂടിയ അസംസ്കൃത എണ്ണ ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്ന പ്ളാന്‍റിനെ കുറിച്ചാണ് കമ്പനി ആലോചിക്കുന്നത്. നിലവില്‍ ജാംനഗറിലുള്ള രണ്ട് പ്ളാന്‍റുകളിലായി പ്രതി ദിനം 14 ലക്ഷം ബരാല്‍ അസംസ്കൃത എണ്ണ ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

The fixed-deposit (FD) fraud at banks is getting bigger. The economic offences wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police on Thursday said it had filed nine first information reports against several bank officials for colluding with outsiders in committing FD frauds of at least Rs 700 crore. Preliminary inquiry is currently on in another 10 cases.

The EOW was cooperating with the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case, as some of the accused were the same as those who perpetrated the Dena Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce frauds, EOW officials said. Apart from those two banks, officials from Vijaya Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of India and Dhanlaxmi Bank were under scrutiny for alleged involvement, EOW said.

The total amount involved was estimated to be at least Rs 700 crore, said Rajvardhan Sinha, assistant commissioner police, EOW. The amount could get bigger, with police expecting more customers to come forward and register complaints.

This includes the Rs 436 crore misappropriation of funds (Rs 180 crore in OBC and Rs 256 crore in Dena) unearthed last week.    

Besides a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the government has also ordered a forensic audit.

The perpetrators of the fraud misused the cash credit facilities available against FDs of entities like the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority, South Indian Education Society and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. So far, four people have been arrested while six others are under the scanner. The mastermind of the scam is reported to be Mohammed Fasihuddin of Showman Group.

A Bank of India executive said the amount in its case was less than Rs 7 crore. Internally, the bank has already taken action against the employee concerned and also tightened monitoring of business related to big-ticket fixed deposits.

A Vijaya Bank executive said the amount involved in its case was about Rs 5 crore. The bank has completed its investigation in the matter.

Elaborating on the modus operandi, police said the accused approached the trusts and individuals to open FDs with public-sector banks using middlemen. In return, these entities were given a slightly higher rate of interest. Once the FD was opened, the accused gave fake receipts to the entities and used the original ones to open accounts with forged documents. They then transferred the overdraft amount to their accounts using the real-time gross settlement system facility.
