Why Rupee Hit 13-Month Low of 63.54


Here are the reasons for the sharp weakness in the rupee,

1) Risk assets including equites are under pressure amid rising concerns about the global economy. Sliding oil prices and a downbeat China factory survey weighed on Asian shares on Tuesday, while the rouble jumped after Russia sharply increased its benchmark interest rate in a bid to halt a collapse in its currency.

2) The rupee has come under selling pressure tracking steep losses in emerging market currencies. On Monday, the Indonesian rupiah hit a 16-year low amidst a slump in crude prices and worries about US rate hikes expected next year.

3) A slew of negative data points have hit domestic sentiments, analysts say. Trade deficit widened to $16.9 billion in November - an 18 month high. A year ago, trade deficit was under $10 billion. The unexpected contraction in industrial output in October has sparked concerns about economic growth.

4) Foreign funds have sold shares in each of the last five trading sessions until Monday, putting pressure on the rupee, analysts say.

5) Expectations of a rate cut have led to softening of bond yields and put pressure on the currency, analysts say. (Also read: Rate cut in doubt amid global turmoil)

By 1:47 p.m., the partially convertible rupee was at 63.40 per dollar versus its Monday's close of 62.94/95.

The BSE Sensex slumped to a two-month low of 26,500 on Wednesday, while the rupee weakened to 63.89 per dollar - a level not seen since November 2013. The sudden fall in Indian stock and currency markets has been triggered by an economic crisis in Russia, where the rouble crashed to 80 per dollar on Tuesday, a slide of 23 per cent in 24 hours despite the central bank raising interest rates by a whopping 6.5 percentage points.

Here's how the Russian crisis is impacting India:

1) Russia's currency - the rouble- has depreciated about 50 per cent since January because of a crash in oil prices. Crude oil has dropped below $56 a barrel from a summer high of $107. The bulk of the government's revenues come from oil.

2) The sharp fall in the rouble has diminished Russia's position as an economic power. It's GDP, in dollar terms, has halved from $2.1 trillion in January 2014 and it is no longer the world's eighth-largest economy in dollar terms.

3) The crisis in Russia comes at a time when economies in Europe, Japan and China are slowing or are in a recession. Russia is a large trading partner for some of the world's biggest economies such as China, Germany and Japan, so the economic crisis in the country may lead to a global contagion.

4) Global economic organizations such as IMF and the World Bank are unlikely to come to the rescue of Russia because of economic sanctions imposed by Western countries for its aggression in Ukraine.

5) Investors fear that Russia may default on its foreign debt obligations, which would inflict hundreds of billions in losses on lenders abroad. There are also fears that the Russian authorities will impose capital control to prevent the ruble from sliding. These possibilities have caused investors to flee from Russia.

6) India has come in the crossfire because it has been the recipient of over $40 billion in foreign inflows this year. The financial contagion in Russia has led global investors to exit riskier assets and countries where they have earned good profits. Indian stock markets are up over 25 per cent year-to-date despite recent fall.

7) Foreign investors have been net sellers of Indian stocks over the last six sessions. On Tuesday, they sold shares worth Rs 1,247 crore, their biggest daily net sales since October 17. Foreign investors have also turned sellers of debt for the first time in December on Monday, having sold a net $146.56 million.

8) Part of the liquidity crunch is also on account of profit booking by foreign investors as the calendar year comes to an end. But, a significant selloff in the coming days would indicate risk aversion and would be negative for stocks and the rupee.

9) Companies that have businesses in Russia have come under sharp selloff. Drug makers such as Dr Reddy's Lab and state-run ONGC, which have sizeable operations in Russia, have fallen sharply on fears of slowdown in Russia.

10) Countries with relatively stronger economies such as Britain, Germany and Japan have seen inflows. Bond yields in these countries have hit record lows. The US dollar has gained because the American economy is on a mend. Long-dated yields in US reached their lowest since late 2012.

തിരുവനന്തപുരം: ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക സ്ഥിതിക്ക് ഭീഷണിയാകും വിധം രൂപയുടെ മൂല്യം കുത്തനേ ഇടിയുന്നു. പതിമ്മൂന്ന് മാസത്തിനിടയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ താഴ്ചയാണ് ഇന്നലെ സംഭവിച്ചത്. ഒറ്റയടിക്ക് 34 പൈസ കുറഞ്ഞ് ഡോളറുമായുള്ള രൂപയുടെ വിനിമയ നിരക്ക് 63.89 രൂപയായി. കുറച്ച് നാളായി രൂപയുടെ മൂല്യം കുറഞ്ഞു വരികയായിരുന്നു. ഇത് 65 - 67 രൂപ വരെ പോയേക്കാമെന്നാണ് സാമ്പത്തിക വിദഗ്ദ്ധർ നൽകുന്ന സൂചന.

പ്രധാന കാരണം
ഏതിന്റെയും മൂല്യം കൂടുന്നത് അതിന്റെ ഡിമാൻഡും സപ്ളൈയും തമ്മിലുള്ള അനുപാതത്തെ ആശ്രയിച്ചാണ്. ഡോളറിന്റെ ഡിമാൻഡ് കൂടി. മേയ് മാസത്തിനുശേഷം എണ്ണയുടെയും പ്രതിരോധ മേഖലയിലെ ഇറക്കുമതിയുടെയും ബില്ല് കൂടി. കോർപറേറ്റുകൾ വൻതോതിൽ ഇറക്കുമതിക്ക് ഡോളർ ചെലവിട്ടു. അതേസമയം ‌ഡോളറിന്റെ സപ്ളൈ കുറഞ്ഞു. കഴിഞ്ഞ ജൂൺ, ജൂലായ് മാസങ്ങളിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ ഓഹരി വിപണിയിൽ നിന്ന് വിദേശ നിക്ഷേപ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ 545.7 ദശലക്ഷം ഡോളറാണ് പിൻവലിച്ചത്. ഫെഡറൽ റിസർവ് പലിശ നിരക്ക് കൂട്ടിയതിനാൽ ഈ പണം അവർ അമേരിക്കയിൽ നിക്ഷേപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇതാണ് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഡോളറിന്റെ സപ്ളൈ കുറയാൻ ഇടയാക്കിയത്. ഇത് പരിഹരിക്കാൻ റിസർവ് ബാങ്ക് കരുതൽ ശേഖരത്തിലെ ഡോളർ വിൽക്കാൻ തുനിഞ്ഞതുമില്ല. രൂപയുടെ മൂല്യം 65 -ൽ എത്തിയാൽ റിസർവ് ബാങ്ക് അടിയന്തരമായി ഇടപെടാനാണ് സാദ്ധ്യത.

3. സ്വർണത്തിന്റെ ഡിമാൻഡ് പെട്ടെന്ന് കൂടിയതും ഉയർന്ന വ്യാപാര കമ്മിയും തിരിച്ചടിയായി.
4. റിസർവ് ബാങ്കിന്റെ ഇടപെടൽ വേണ്ടത്ര ഫലപ്രദമായില്ല.
 ആഘാതം
1. പണപ്പെരുപ്പം രൂക്ഷമാകും. സാധനങ്ങളുടെ വില കൂടും.

No Serious Crisis in Rupee, Says Arun Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday said there is no "serious crisis" in the rupee. Speaking in Rajya Sabha, he blamed the rising dollar for the recent weakness in the rupee and said the strength in the US currency posed a "serious challenge" for emerging markets.

Mr Jaitley's statement came at a time when the rupee witnessed its most volatile week in many months. The rupee posted its biggest single-day fall in more than four months on Monday and slumped to 63.89 two days later, a level not seen since November 2013.

The finance minister, however, said that the Indian currency was doing much better than several emerging market currencies.

"The rupee is doing much better as compared to other currencies of trading countries... it has strengthened vis-a-vis them," Mr Jaitley said.

Analysts have attributed the sharp slump in the rupee earlier this week to a global risk contagion, triggered by the crash in the Russian rouble. Concerns that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates sooner-than-expected in the US also roiled financial markets.

"A section of the markets anticipated that interest rates in the US will increase," the finance minister said.

Late Wednesday, the Fed said it will be "patient" about raising rates in the US, a statement interpreted as dovish by analysts. The Fed's benign outlook led to a sharp recovery in the rupee and the currency pulled back below the 63 per dollar mark briefly today.

"For two days it witnessed volatility, but there is a sobering effect as far as rupee is concerned," Mr Jaitley added.
