Yazin Nizar

For a while, Yazin Nizar appeared to be yet another playback singer from the reality music turf who fade away in no time. But years on, he has become a name to reckon with and his name figures in South Indian music charts, alongside hit songs by top musicians. Excerpts from a chat with the up and coming singer:


Yazin was born into a family of music lovers, and it was his father who encouraged him the most. "I was an active participant in school level talent fests and have won the zonal and state level Kalapratibha title at the CBSE youth festival. I later took part in the Gandharvasangeetham show and also won the title. I debuted in playback singing through the film Punarjani around the same time," he recollects.

However, it was not a smooth run for the singer. Lady luck hardly smiled at his musical career and the youngster went on to complete his graduation and an MBA from Chennai, where he is now settled. He also sang for composers Sharreth and Shaan Rahman in a few films but they went unnoticed as the films didn't do well. "I was also part of the winning team of Sangeetha Mahayudham and another show on Jeevan TV, but they didn't help much," he says. All of that changed once the songs of films like Spanish Masala, Ozhimuri and Thattathin Marayathu were out.


The dark spell has passed and Yazin is now a singer with an impressive body of work in film music across South India. It's the hit track Avatha Payya from Paradesi, composed by GV Prakash, which opened more doors for him in Kollywood. He also went on to sing for other top composers like Yuvan Shankar Raja and Ghibran in Tamil, and many young and veteran music makers of Malayalam. Glance through his list of songs and it's quite evident that the singer is a versatile artiste. "Initially, I just loved melodies but gradually I explored more of other genre of music too and loved it. I enjoy exploring different styles of singing. It feels great that my voice has not been stereotyped." Most recently, he had sung for Malayalam films Cousins and Mylanchi Monjulla Veedu.

A serious musician, he stays away from anything that can play spoilsport with his voice. "I completely avoid cold food. I don't drink or smoke either," he reveals. Yazin had appeared in the video of the song Zindagi... in the film Angry Babies in Love, but he isn't keen about pursuing acting any further. "I simply feel I am not good at it, neither do I enjoy the experience much. I would rather focus on music," he says.

Yazin's voice can be heard next in Kamal Haasan's Uthama Villain, for which he has crooned two theatre-style narratives, composed by Ghibran. "I happened to meet Kamal sir for the film's audio launch and it felt great when he said he liked the songs," signs off the singer.

Talking on re inventing oneself. Here this is the extreme limits. If Raja sir going to follow today's western classical then rest of composers will have hard time.
