(കാട്ടശ്ശേരി ജോസഫ് യേശുദാസ്; born 10 January 1940) is an Indian classical musician and a playback singer. He has won the National Award for the best male playback singer seven times, the most by any singer and the State Award for the best playback singer more than thirty times by the Government of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Yesudas sings Indian classical music, devotional and popular songs. He has recorded more than 55,000 songs in many languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tulu, Malay, Russian, Arabic, Latin and English through his long career spanning Five Decades. He has been singing for most Indian languages except Assamese, Konkani and Kashmiri. He also composed number of Malayalam film songs in 70's and 80's. He is fondly called Gana Gandharvan.

K. J. Yesudas was born in Fort Kochi, Kerala, to Augustine Joseph and Alicekutty. His father, who was a well-known Malayalam classical musician and stage actor, was his first guru. Later he joined the Music Academy in Thrippunithura and underwent training. For a brief period, he was with Sri Vechur Hari Hara Subramania Iyer after which he took advanced training from Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, a maestro of Classical Music.Although he is a Carnatic Music expert he mastered Hindustani Music. He has taken the words of Sree Narayana Guru, "One Religion, One Caste for all humans" to heart.Yesudas is married to Prabha for more than 30 years. They have three sons, Vinod, Vijay and Vishal. The second son Vijay Yesudas is a budding musician who won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2007. The family is currently settled in Chennai and Trivandrum. He also owns estates in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA and Flower Mound, TX, USA for personal and business reasons.

Yesudas began his career in playback singing in Malayalam and Kollywood movies in the early 60's and by mid 70's he entered Bollywood. He has bagged seven National Film Awards for the best singer in the Indian film industry which is a record no singer has equalled, let alone surpassed. In 2006, he sang 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on the same day at AVM Studio, Chennai.

Yesudas has performed in many major cities around the world. In 1965, he was invited by the Soviet Union government to perform at music concerts in various cities in the USSR and also sang a Russian song over Radio Kazakhstan. In 2001 he sang for album Ahimsa in Sanskrit, Latin and English and in a mix of styles including New-Age and Carnatic. In his music concerts in the Middle East he sings Arabic songs in the Carnatic style. He frequently did the role of a cultural ambassador of India through his numerable performances abroad by promoting Indian Music.

He is the only singer who has been accorded the title Asthana Gayakan (Official singer) of Kerala State. He has been awarded the Padma Shri in 1975 and Padma Bhushan in 2002. In 1970, he was nominated to head the Sangeetha Nataka Academy of Kerala and was being the youngest person ever to occupy that post. In 1971, Yesudas with his musical troupe travelled all over Kerala to raise funds for the Indian Prime Minister's National Defense Fund during the Indo-Pakistani War. He also became Senate member in the International Parliament for Safety and Peace.  On November 14, 1999, Yesudas was presented with an honorary award by UNESCO for "Outstanding Achievements in Music and Peace" at the "Music for Peace" event in Paris, a concert held to mark the dawn of the new millennium and whose attendees included artistes such as Lionel Richie, Ray Charles, Montserrat Caballé, and Zubin Mehta.

Interview with K J YESUDAS

ലോകത്തെവിടെയുമുള്ള മലയാളിക്ക് ചിരപരിചിതമായ ഒരു സ്വരം. അത് യേശുദാസിന്റെ മാത്രം. എത്രയോ ഗായകര്‍ വരുന്നു; ഗായകര്‍ പോകുന്നു. യേശുദാസിന്റെ സംഗീതം പിന്നെയും ഒഴുകുന്നു!
ആരാധകരുടെ എണ്ണത്തിലും ഇതേ വര്‍ധന. ഒരിക്കല്‍ യേശുദാസ് ഒരു വിദ്യാലയത്തില്‍ പരിപാടി അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ എത്തി. കാപ്പികുടിക്കിടെ അദ്ദേഹം കഴിച്ച ഒരു പഴത്തിന്റെ തൊലി ഒരു പെണ്‍കുട്ടി എടുത്തു തിന്നുവത്രേ. ഇതിനിടെ കാപ്പി കൊടുത്തപ്പോള്‍ മറ്റൊരു കുട്ടിയുടെ വിരല്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൈയില്‍ തട്ടി. അവള്‍ ആ വിരലും പൊക്കി പിടിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു നടന്നു, 'യേശുദാസിനെ തൊട്ട വിരല്‍ '!!

അങ്ങനെയുള്ള ഗാനഗന്ധര്‍വന്‍ അടുത്തയിടെ കോട്ടയത്ത് എത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ അദ്ദേഹവുമായി അല്പസമയം ചെലവഴിക്കാന്‍ അവസരം ലഭിച്ചു. കാഞ്ഞിരത്താനം മുതല്‍ കോട്ടയത്തെ കഞ്ഞിക്കുഴി വരെ ഒരു കാര്‍ യാത്ര. ഏറെനാള്‍ മനസില്‍ അടക്കി പിടിച്ച ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒന്നൊന്നായി അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് ചോദിച്ചു.

എന്നാണ് തുടക്കം?

അഞ്ചാം വയസിലാണ് എനിക്ക് സംഗീതത്തോട് താത്പര്യം തോന്നി തുടങ്ങിയത്. അപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ പഠനവും തുടങ്ങി. പക്ഷേ ഇന്നും പല കാര്യങ്ങളും എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ല എന്നാണ് ഞാന്‍ കരുതുന്നത്. അന്നത്തെ കാലത്ത് ഒരു അഹിന്ദുവിന് കര്‍ണാടക സംഗീതം അഭ്യസിക്കുക വളരെ ബുദ്‌ധിമുട്ടുള്ള കാര്യമായിരുന്നു. എന്റെ പിതാവ് അഗസ്‌റ്റിന്‍ ജോസഫ് ഭാഗവതരുടെ ശ്രമഫലമായാണ് എനിക്ക് അതിനുള്ള ഭാഗ്യം ലഭിച്ചത്. സംഗീതവും അതിനോടുള്ള സ്‌നേഹവുമാണ് ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനമെന്ന് ഞാന്‍ മനസിലാക്കി. എന്നെ മുന്നോട്ട് നയിച്ചതും ആ അറിവു തന്നെ.

ആരാണ് സംഗീതവഴിയില്‍ ഏറ്റവും പ്രചോദനമേകിയത്?

അച്‌ഛനും ഗുരുക്കന്മാരും. അവര്‍ എന്നും എന്റെ മനസിലുണ്ട്. ഓരോ കച്ചേരിക്കു മുമ്പും ഞാന്‍ അവരോട് പ്രാര്‍ഥിച്ച് അനുഗ്രഹം തേടും. എന്നെ ഞാനാക്കിയ ചെമ്പൈ വൈദ്യനാഥ ഭാഗവതര്‍, ബാലമുരളീകൃഷ്‌ണ ഭാഗവതര്‍, ശെമ്മാങ്കുടി ശ്രീനിവാസ ഭാഗവതര്‍ എന്നിവരോടുള്ള കടപ്പാട് വളരെയധികമാണ്. ഒരു നല്ല സംഗീതകാരനാകാന്‍ അച്‌ഛനമ്മമാരുടെ അനുഗ്രഹവും ഗുരുവിന്റെ മാര്‍ഗനിര്‍ദേശവും വേണമെന്ന് ഞാന്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്നത്തെ കുട്ടികള്‍ ടേപ്പ് റിക്കാര്‍ഡറിലൂടെ പാട്ടു പഠിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നതു കാണാം. അത് ശരിയല്ല

ഒട്ടേറെ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍, നിരവധി അംഗീകാരങ്ങള്‍. ഇനി എന്താണ് ആഗ്രഹം?

കരിയറിന്റെ ഈ ഘട്ടത്തില്‍ ജനങ്ങളുടെ അംഗീകാരം മാത്രമാണ് എന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം. കാരണം ശ്രോതാവിന് അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ പ്രേക്ഷകന് തന്നെ വേണ്ടാതാകുന്ന നിമിഷത്തില്‍ ഒരു കലാകാരന്‍ വിരമിക്കണമെന്ന അഭിപ്രായക്കാരനാണ് ഞാന്‍. ഇന്നും ആളുകള്‍ തരുന്ന സ്‌നേഹവും അംഗീകാരവുമാണ് ഞാന്‍ ഏറ്റവും വിലമതിക്കുന്നത്. അതല്ലാതെ എനിക്ക് ആഗ്രഹങ്ങളൊന്നുമില്ല.

സംഗീതസര്‍‌വകലാശാല തുടങ്ങണമെന്ന ഒരു ആഗ്രഹം മുമ്പ് പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നല്ലോ. ഇപ്പോഴും അങ്ങനെ ഒരു ആശയമുണ്ടോ?

അത് ഒരു സ്വപ്നമായി തുടരുന്നു. ഒരു വ്യക്തിക്ക് നടപ്പിലാക്കാന്‍ പറ്റാത്തത്ര വിലപ്പിടിപ്പുള്ള സ്വപ്‌നമാണതെന്ന് ഞാന്‍ കരുതുന്നു. സര്‍ക്കാരിനാണ് ഇത്തരം കാര്യങ്ങളുടെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വം. എന്നെ പോലുള്ളവര്‍ ഉപകരണങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം.

പാട്ടില്‍ കര്‍ണാട്ടിക്, ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി ശൈലികള്‍ കലര്‍ത്തുന്നുവെന്ന് ആരോപണമുണ്ടല്ലോ?

ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സംസ്‌കാരവും സംഗീതവും ലോകത്തിലെല്ലാം എത്തിക്കണമെന്ന ആഗ്രഹക്കാരനാണു ഞാന്‍. കര്‍ണാട്ടിക്, ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി ശൈലികള്‍ ഞാന്‍ കലര്‍ത്താറുണ്ട്. ഓരോന്നിനുമുണ്ട് അതിന്റേതായ മികവുകളും കുറവുകളും. കര്‍ണാടകസംഗീതത്തില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങരുതെന്ന ആഗ്രഹം എനിക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അതാണ് ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനിയും പഠിച്ചത്.

സിനിമയിലെത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ യേശുദാസ് എന്ന പേരു മാറ്റണമെന്ന് ആരെങ്കിലും പറഞ്ഞോ?

തീര്‍ച്ചയായും. അന്ന് ദിലീപ് കുമാര്‍ എന്ന പേരൊക്കെയായിരുന്നു ഫാഷന്‍. പക്ഷേ എന്റെ പിതാവ് അതിനോട് ശക്തിയായി വിയോജിച്ചു. യേശുദാസ് എന്ന പേരുമായി സിനിമയില്‍ വിജയിക്കാനാവില്ലെങ്കില്‍ സിനിമ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചോളൂ എന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞത്.

ആ അച്ഛന്റെ വാദം ശരിയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് കാലം തെളിയിച്ചു. സംഗീതം എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ പര്യായമായി യേശുദാസ് എന്ന പേരു മാറി. അതു പോലെ യേശുദാസ് എന്ന വ്യക്തിക്കും സംഗീതത്തില്‍ നിന്നു വേറിട്ട് ഒരു അസ്‌തിത്വമില്ല. ചുണ്ടില്‍ മൂളാന്‍ ഈണങ്ങള്‍. താളാത്മകമായ ചലനങ്ങള്‍. യാത്രക്കിടയിലും ഈ പതിവു ശീലങ്ങള്‍ അതേ പോലെ കണ്ടു. സംഗീതം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ജീവിതമാണ് സാഫല്യമാണ്.
