Flash is dead, long live Fl– actually, no, scratch that, Flash really is dead and it deserved to die. Flash is terrible.

The killer blows to Adobe’s multimedia browser plugin were delivered this week in a one-two punch. Firstly, users of Flash were left open to not one but two “zero-day” vulnerabilities in the same week, affecting users of Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox. Almost immediately, hackers were able to abuse these flaws to dump malware on Windows PCs, which led Mozilla to disable the plugin entirely until users had updated to a secure version.

Then on Tuesday, YouTube – the biggest provider of Flash video ever – announced that it would stop serving its videos using the plugin for anyone visiting the site in a modern browser.

“There were limitations that held it back from becoming our preferred platform for video delivery,” wrote the site’s engineering manager, Richard Leider, four years ago. “Most critically, HTML5 lacked support for Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) that lets us show you more videos with less buffering.

“Over the last four years, we’ve worked with browser vendors and the broader community to close those gaps, and now, YouTube uses HTML5 by default in Chrome, IE 11, Safari 8 and in beta versions of Firefox.”

The writing has been on the wall for Flash for almost a decade – ever since the iPhone launched in 2007 with no support for the plugin. At the time, Apple was lambasted for its absence; the company worked with Google to create a standalone YouTube app, but many other sites were only partly functional until they bowed to user pressure and built “mobile friendly”.

Three years later, the pressure was such that Steve Jobs wrote a rare missive publicly addressing the company’s continued refusal to include the software. “Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice,” he argued. “Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low-power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.”

A year after Jobs’ letter, Adobe killed the mobile Flash player for Android devices, fully retreating from the post-PC world.

With YouTube following suit, it doesn’t look like long until the player is a relic of an internet past. But before we all uninstall it, maybe it’s time to look back at the great hits of Flash gone by.

The End of the World

Time was, Flash animations ruled the internet. The End of the World wasn’t the best of them, not the first, but it was one that perfectly exemplified the medium for a long time. Scratchy amateurish drawings with worse animation, bad caricatures of George Bush, and jokes which don’t really make sense, it was a surefire viral hit.

But amateurish animation doesn’t necessarily mean inelegant. Xiao Xiao, a nine-part series which started in April 2001, began as just two stick figures fighting in a featureless room, and static pictures don’t do it justice: the beauty is in motion. Over the course of the series’ progression, the animation got better and better, but even from the first episode, what stood out was stylish choreography which could put Hollywood to shame. He breaks a stick and kicks it into a guy’s face! Eleven-year-old me thought this was great.

Salad Fingers

Created by the British cartoonist David Firth, Salad Fingers felt like one of the first flash animations that went fully viral, inhabiting normal pop culture as well as the weird internet one. That was mostly because it was relentlessly, inexplicably creepy. Salad Fingers is a green man with weird fingers and a weirder voice. He wants to stroke your rusty kettle. He likes spoons.

The series is still, infrequently, being produced, with the most recent episode coming out in 2013.

Weebl and Bob

Another British creation Weebl and Bob are two wobbly eggs who like pie. That set-up took the animation through over 100 episodes, onto MTV in a series of licensed indents, and a made for DVD special. The creator, Jonti Picking, was also hired by Anchor Butter to make adverts for the product featuring cows rather than eggs.

The noughties were weird.

The undoubted star of early Flash animations is Homestar Runner. Another comedy series, initially starring Homestar Runner himself, it soon sprawled into a whole host of linked series – and spawned an even bigger star than its lead in the form of Strong Bad, an angry Mexican wrestler who responds to readers emails and mocks typos. When a new episode was dropped without warning in October 2014, the internet freaked out – and with reason.

While YouTube killed the Flash animation star, the plugin stuck around a bit longer, thanks to online games – at least until the game development platform Unity superseded it there too. Hedgehog Launch was the breakout hit of developer John Cooney, better known as jmtb02, and tasked players with launching a hedgehog into space. Addictive, intuitive, fun and cute, it was a sure-fire hit, and propelled Cooney into a career making increasingly smart games that never lost sight of the need for pure viral magic.
The Helicopter Game

This simple flight sim, which requires you to deftly tap the mouse button to keep your chopper airborne, is one of the most played Flash games in the history of the platform. It’s also surely an influence on one of the biggest smartphone gaming hits of 2013: Flappy Bird. Be warned: if you start playing it, you probably won’t get anything else done today.

Before buying a sound bar, you need to consider aspects like output power (for adequate room-filling sound), connectivity options (Bluetooth, USB, analog inputs, etc), and aesthetics (to match your TV's looks).

Also keep in mind that sound bars tend to block the TV's remote-control sensor. Check for the placement of your television's sensor, and whether the unit you are considering might come in the way. The sales executives should be able to help you figure this out.

Here are a few Bluetooth-enabled, 2.1-channel sound bar options that are available in two variations...

With an external subwoofer
The Samsung HW-F551 (Rs 26,990) is a 310W system with a wireless subwoofer for a clutter-free setup. This sound bar comes with two HDMI connections, letting you hook it up to the TV and Blu-ray player. It is equipped with a USB port that takes in input from pen drives and supports audio formats like WAV, AAC, MP3, WMA and OGG.

Then, there's the 260W Sony HT-GT1 (Rs 18,990), which is equipped with NFC for connecting compatible devices, a USB port, with support for WAV, MP3, WMA and AAC audio formats, and an FM receiver for radio. Unlike the Samsung sound bar, the HT-GT1 does not have an HDMI port. The TV will need to be connected to its analog inputs.

You can also look at the 200W Philips HTL3140B12 (Rs 19,500), which also supports NFC connections, HDMI, and USB playback. Both these systems come with a wired subwoofer.

With a built-in subwoofer
Alternatively, if space is a big concern then you can go for a sound bar that has a built-in bass unit.

The Yamaha YAS-103 (Rs 24,000), for instance, is a 120W system that uses two full-range drivers for stereo sound and a pair of down-firing subs to deliver bass. The system sports analog, digital coaxial and optical inputs, but you do not get HDMI and USB with this model. On the other hand, the YAS-103 has an IR repeater to forward remote signals to the TV if it is blocking the latter's sensor.

Finally, consider the 100W Onkyo Envision Cinema LS-T10 (Rs 25,000) that packs in six speaker drivers, a single down-firing sub, and is pre-programmed to respond to the remote controls of nine major TV brands. NEW DELHI: The world's top search engine Google has launched a Person Finder tool to help the victims of earthquake in Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. The web application is aimed to help people gather and relay information about those affected by the devastation.

The web application is aimed at helping individuals to post details of and search for the status of family members or friends affected by the earthquake.

The application has two boxes: one, 'I'm looking for someone'; and two, 'I have information about someone'.

For those who are looking for someone trapped or lost in the disaster, they can click on 'I'm looking for someone' and type in his/her name.

Similarly, if an individual wants his relatives or friends to know that he is safe, or if he has heard from someone or about someone stuck in the disaster affected area, then he can share the information through 'I have information about someone'.




Google is offering People finder support in both English and Nepali.

The internet giant has used this application previously too during natural calamities in Jammu & Kashmir last year and in Uttarakhand in June 2013.

With Apple Watch orders already listing delivery times as late as June, the Apple Watch is a luxury few people can experience fully just yet. We’ll be running a full review once we get hold of one and use it for an extended time, but David Phelan is one of the few who has one. Here's his experience so far.

11 days with the Apple Watch

When I first heard about the Apple Watch I was unconvinced. It looked nice and all, but how would it work and what would it be good for?
I’ve been using the Apple Watch for 11 days now, putting it through its paces and testing texting, calling, and everything else. I’d say it’s only when you get your hands on it that it really begins to make sense.

Are the notifications useful or annoying?

Mostly useful. As you’ll know, the Watch picks up notifications like emails, texts, Facebook updates and more – whatever you select – from your iPhone and delivers them to the Watch so you don't need to take your phone out of your pocket or bag. Even better, you don't need to immerse yourself in the phone obsessively to make sure you’re not missing something.
So when your wrist feels a gentle tap, discreetly lifting your wrist makes the new item ping into view. Not interested? Put your arm down again and it’s gone. Just what you’re waiting for? You can take action on the Watch or your iPhone as appropriate.

If it’s a text message, replying is a cinch. It’ll offer you three messages based on what the incoming text says, spotting key words like ‘or’. If none of those suit, you can dictate your response using Siri. Siri is brilliant but not always very accurate with names. Still, you can send your words as text or a voice file.
Actually, the main time the notifications are annoying is when you’re doing something else, like planning a journey or preparing to go for a run and the message inserts itself at the wrong moment. It’s important to be judicious, mind: have every single text, email, update, newsflash, app notification and so on, it can be such overkill that you end up ignoring everything.
You can turn off the audible alert safely as that tap on the wrist is subtle but unmissable.

Does it help you get around easier?

Yes! Maps works amazingly. If you’re on foot, dictate your destination and it’ll find a route. After showing you the map you see directions on screen. This is several thousand times better than looking like a tourist by holding your smartphone in front of you.

Better still, though, it’s easy to repeatedly sneak a look at your watch (nobody will know you’re lost, just rather precious about timekeeping) the Watch will tap your wrist as you approach every junction. What’s more, there are different taps for left and right so you needn’t even look at the Watch. These instructions work if you’re driving, too, though it’s best not to take your eyes off the road, you know.
Apps available include Citymapper which, if you’re in one of the supported cities, is invaluable. It gives public transport data, including public hire bikes in London, for instance. The small screen means the Watch app gives you choices to get home, to work, a saved route or the nearest Tube, say.

Is the heart rate sensor actually useful?

Depends what you want it for. For some fitness trackers there’s an option to take your heart rate occasionally. With more advanced ones it measures this more often.
Me, I’m a bit obsessive about this kind of data when I can get it, so knowing that the Apple Watch does this regularly and more frequently when using the Workout app was useful. All the data ends up in the Health app on the iPhone, so other apps can use it too.

For most people, it’s true, it will be a diversion rather than an essential feature, but that’s sort of the point. Apple’s created a blank canvas for developers to make use of. It needs to come up with all the hardware so that apps nobody has yet thought of have the support they need.
Apple’s done this itself here – the sensor means you can send your heart rate to other Watch owners. This is no way an essential feature, but it is quite fun and hopefully developers will unlock interesting ways to use the sensor in future.

Is it a good watch?

Well, it certainly keeps good time – plus or minus fifty milliseconds is pretty accurate. And the built-in clock is strong enough to keep it accurate even when it’s away from its companion iPhone.
It’s also versatile. If you’re someone who likes to keep their watch five minutes fast, you can do this in settings. And if you’ve set an alarm, the Watch knows to make sure this goes off at the real eight o’clock rather than the forwarded time the screen shows.

One common complaint is there's a short pause before the screen comes to life when you raise it to look at the time – it isn’t an always on screen. This didn’t bother me too much, though, and the Apple Watch tends to respond faster if you’ve used it recently."
The straps are comfortable, from the soft and tactile sports band to the super-chic Milanese loop, which is endlessly adjustable to suit.

Is battery life a problem?

This was one of my biggest worries. I honestly thought it would be drained by lunchtime or at best by the end of the working day. In fact, even with the intensive use it’s had while I’ve been using it, the battery has never failed. Once or twice it sank near to 10 per cent, but never below. There’s a Power Reserve setting, which turns off all sensors and works just as a watch, but I’ve only invoked this to test it, not because I needed to.

Of course, when you’re using the Watch, you’re using the iPhone, so unsurprisingly the battery life on the phone was affected. Depending on how much I used directions and Maps, this could be a significant difference – but then GPS has always caned the iPhone. This is less of a problem with iPhone 6 Plus thanks to its large battery, but an [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] – and older iPhones with smaller batteries – could be more problematic.
You certainly have to charge the Apple Watch every night and it’s not a very fast charger – I missed one night and there was still a charge in the morning, but it took well over an hour to get back to full.

Does it make your life easier?

Good question. These days lots of people have given up wearing a watch and rely on the one on their smartphone instead. Having the time on, you know, your wrist is certainly more convenient than digging a phone out of your pocket or bag. So while you’re about it, wouldn’t it be good to put more information on that easy-to-read wrist-borne device?
That’s how the Apple Watch works for me, freeing me from my iPhone-checking addiction and letting me see all I need to with consummate convenience. And that’s before you get as far as the way Maps works, which is genius, and the highly useful fitness capabilities. It radically alters the way I use my iPhone, in a good way.
So yes, it can make your life easier – it has made mine easier recently. That doesn’t mean everyone needs one, but then the Apple Watch is an accessory and accessories are, by definition, optional things.
There are enough features here to make a difference and as new apps arrive (and, oh boy, there are going to be a lot of them on their way) the usefulness of the Watch will increase.
Oh, and it looks pretty damn cool, too.

Now You Don't Need To Add Zero Before Dialling An STD Mobile Number

Indian telecom operators have started the process of removing the 0 and 91 STD prefix for dialling a mobile number.
The technical changes seem to have rolled out by operators this week; we tested this on Vodafone and Airtel numbers based out of Delhi and are getting reports of the rollout from other parts of the country as well.

The changes are in compliance with DoT’s (Department of Telecom) deadline on implementation for full mobile number portability (MNP), which was extended by two months from May 3 earlier this month.

The DoT had approved TRAI’s recommendations on MNP on November 2014, and had fixed an implementation deadline of six months.

Full MNP will allow subscribers to retain their mobile number in any part of the country even when they change their operator or state. At present, MNP allows subscribers to change mobile network while retaining their number in the same telecom circle.

Telecom operators will be spending around Rs 200-300 crore to upgrade their networks to implement full MNP across India, reported Business Standard.

TRAI had reported a total telephone subscriber base of 996.49 million users at the end of March 2015, out of which a 3.84 million subscribers had submitted their requests for mobile number portability.

4. Adjust your screen brightness - Dimming your display
saves battery power.
5. Tweak Windows Power Options - Choose a Laptop power
scheme that turns off the notebook monitor and hard disk
after 10 minutes of inactivity.
6. Decrease or mute the Laptop Speaker Volume.
7. Turn off all scheduled tasks.
8. Turn off Auto-save features in Microsoft Office and other
applications.
9. If your PC has a built-in wireless card, turn it off or disable
it when not in use.
10. Programs that are run from a CD or DVD can be copied
to and run from the hard drive, which typically consumes
less power than an optical drive.

Standby mode

Use standby to save power when you will be away from the
computer for a short time while working - your monitor and
hard disks turn off, all applications and open files are stored
in RAM. When you want to use the computer again, it
comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored
exactly as you left it.

Hibernation Mode

Use hibernation to save power when you will be away from
the computer for an extended time while working - your
computer shuts down to save power but first saves
everything in memory on your hard disk. When you restart
the computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it.
When you choose Start, Turn Off Computer in Windows XP,
your options are Stand By, Turn Off, and Restart. To
Hibernate, place the cursor over Stand By, then hold down
Shift and click.
