NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a request for police cases against Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Ahmad Patel in the request for police cases against Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Ahmad Patel in the AgustaWestland chopper scam. The court will decide next week whether to take it forward.

Lawyer ML Sharma has petitioned the Supreme Court for FIRs or First Information Reports against the Congress leaders, who have been named in documents annexed to an Italian court in the VVIP chopper deal.

The petition comes in the middle of a massive row in Parliament over the 3,600 crore deal for the supply of 12 choppers for use by top Indian leaders including the prime minister, which was signed when the Congress-led UPA was in power.

The helicopters are manufactured by AgustaWestland, whose parent company Finmeccanica is Italian; its top executives were investigated for corruption in Italy. The Italian court of Appeals has said that Agusta hired middlemen to pay bribes to decision-makers in India to swing the deal.

The ruling BJP has targeted Sonia Gandhi after an Italian Court of Appeals order cited documents that refer to the Congress leader.

Amit Sha said congress President Sonia Gandhi should make it clear who received bribes in the AgustaWestland chopper scam.

"She should clear who took the money... If she says this much, everything will be clear in front of the people," Mr Shah said.

"You say are not scared of anything. We in the BJP fear the Constitution, rule of law and societal norms," the BJP president said, daring the Congress chief.

With the BJP making it clear that it will target her in Parliament over alleged corruption in the deal to buy 12 helicopters for use by top politicians, Mrs Gandhi had made a strong statement yesterday.

"I have done nothing wrong. The government is there for two years, an inquiry is there. Why don't they complete it as early as possible...and impartially?" she asked, speaking to reporters.

Mrs Gandhi is named in documents that were reviewed by an Italian court before it decided bribes had been paid to Indians.

The helicopters are manufactured by AgustaWestland, whose parent company is Italian; its top executives were investigated for corruption in Italy.

The Rs. 3,600-crore deal for a dozen VVIP choppers was cancelled by India in 2014 after the Italians began investigating it.

Documents related to the negotiations and reviewed by the Italian court refer to "Signora Gandhi" as "the driving force" in seeking the new helicopters and mention her advisors including Ahmed Patel and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.       The BJP says this proves that Mrs Gandhi and the party's top leaders were involved in kickbacks.

The Congress retaliated by saying AgustaWestland has not been banned by the new government from bidding for new defence deals.

തന്‍െറ പല മുന്‍ഗാമികളെക്കാള്‍ വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തനാണ് നിലവിലെ റിസര്‍വ് ബാങ്ക് ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ രഘുറാം രാജന്‍. ഒരു വിദേശ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണത്തിന് അനുവദിച്ച അഭിമുഖത്തിലെ പരാമര്‍ശങ്ങളാണ് ഏറ്റവും ഒടുവില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വിവാദത്തിന്‍െറ കേന്ദ്ര ബിന്ദുവാക്കിയത്. ആഗോള സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്ഥാനം സംബന്ധിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍െറ ഉപമ സാമ്പത്തികവളര്‍ച്ചയെ ചൊല്ലി ഊറ്റംകൊള്ളുന്ന കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാറിനും ധനമന്ത്രിക്കും കടുത്ത പ്രഹരമായി. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ കടന്നല്‍ക്കൂട്ടില്‍ കല്ലിട്ടതുപോലെയായിരുന്നു പിന്നീടുള്ള പ്രതികരണങ്ങള്‍.

‘കുരുടസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ ഒറ്റക്കണ്ണന്‍ രാജാവ്’ എന്നാണ് ഇന്ത്യയെ അദ്ദേഹം വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത്. രാജന്‍െറ വാക്കുകള്‍ക്കെതിരെ ധനമന്ത്രി അരുണ്‍ ജെയ്റ്റ്ലിയും വാണിജ്യകാര്യമന്ത്രി നിര്‍മല സീതാരാമനും രംഗത്തുവരുകയും ചെയ്തു. രണ്ടു ദിവസത്തിനുശേഷം നാഷനല്‍ സ്കൂള്‍ ഓഫ് ബാങ്ക് മാനേജ്മെന്‍റിലെ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളുടെ ബിരുദദാനച്ചടങ്ങില്‍ പ്രസംഗിക്കവെ തന്‍െറ പ്രതികരണത്തില്‍ ആര്‍.ബി.ഐ ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ ക്ഷമ ചോദിച്ചു, രാജ്യത്തെ കുരുടന്മാരോട്. തുടര്‍ന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം തന്‍െറ പ്രതികരണത്തെ ന്യായീകരിച്ച് നടത്തിയ വിശദീകരണം കഴിഞ്ഞ ഏതാനും വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി ലോകത്തെ എണ്ണപ്പെട്ട സാമ്പത്തികശക്തിയായി ഇന്ത്യ കുതിക്കുന്നു എന്ന അവകാശവാദങ്ങളുടെ പൊള്ളത്തരങ്ങള്‍ തുറന്നുകാട്ടലായി.

എന്നാല്‍, രാജന്‍ പറഞ്ഞ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പുതിയതൊന്നുമല്ല. പല സ്വതന്ത്ര സാമ്പത്തിക വിദഗ്ധരും ഇക്കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുമുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍, കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാറിന്‍െറ ഒരു ഉത്തരവാദിത്തപ്പെട്ട ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്‍തന്നെ അത് തുറന്നു പറഞ്ഞുവെന്നതാണ് ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ വ്യത്യാസം.ലോകം സാമ്പത്തികമാന്ദ്യത്തിന്‍െറ പിടിയില്‍ അകപ്പെട്ടതുമുതല്‍ ചൈനക്കൊപ്പം ഇന്ത്യയും ലോക സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥയിലെ താരമായി. സാമ്പത്തികവളര്‍ച്ച നിലനിര്‍ത്തിയ രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ എന്നനിലയിലായിരുന്നു ഇത്. എന്നാല്‍, ഇപ്പോള്‍ ചൈനയെയും മറികടന്ന് ഇന്ത്യ കുതിക്കുന്നുവെന്നാണ് അവകാശവാദം. ഇതിനെതിരെയായിരുന്നു ആര്‍.ബി.ഐ ഗവര്‍ണറുടെ പ്രതികരണം.

ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മൊത്ത വാര്‍ഷിക ഉല്‍പാദനത്തിലെ വളര്‍ച്ച 7.5 ശതമാനമായതാണ് ലോക സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥയിലെ ചക്രവര്‍ത്തിയായി ഇന്ത്യ സ്വയം അവരോധിക്കാന്‍ കാരണം. ഈ 7.5 ശതമാനം വളര്‍ച്ച എന്നാല്‍ എത്രയെന്നതാണ് പ്രശ്നം. അമേരിക്കയുടെയോ മറ്റ് ഏതെങ്കിലും സമ്പന്നരാജ്യത്തിന്‍െറയോ സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥയുമായി താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ വളരെ വളരെ ചെറുതാണ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥ. ചൈനയുമായിപോലും ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയെ താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. 2016ല്‍ പുറത്തുവന്ന ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ കണക്കുപ്രകാരം 19 ലക്ഷം കോടി ഡോളറാണ് അമേരിക്കയുടെ വാര്‍ഷിക ആഭ്യന്തര മൊത്ത ഉല്‍പാദനം.
ചൈനയുടേത് 12 ലക്ഷം കോടി ഡോളറും. ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഏഴാം സ്ഥാനത്തുള്ള ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആഭ്യന്തര മൊത്ത ഉല്‍പാദനം വെറും 2.5 ലക്ഷം കോടി ഡോളര്‍ മാത്രമാണ്. വലുപ്പത്തിന്‍െറയും ജനസംഖ്യയുടെയും കാര്യത്തില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ചില സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെയത്ര മാത്രം വരുന്ന ജപ്പാന് 4.3 ലക്ഷം കോടി ഡോളറിന്‍െറ ആഭ്യന്തര മൊത്ത ഉല്‍പാദനമുണ്ട്. ഇറ്റലിക്ക് രണ്ടു ലക്ഷം കോടി ഡോളറും. സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥകള്‍ തമ്മിലെ അന്തരം ഇത്ര ഭീമമായിരിക്കെയാണ് സാമ്പത്തിക വളര്‍ച്ചയുടെ പേരില്‍ ഇന്ത്യ അവകാശവാദങ്ങള്‍ ഉന്നയിക്കുന്നത്.

ആഭ്യന്തര മൊത്ത ഉല്‍പാദനം അടിസ്ഥാന മാക്കിയുള്ള സാമ്പത്തികവളര്‍ച്ച ഒരു രാജ്യത്തിന്‍െറ സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രകടനത്തിന്‍െറ അളവുകോല്‍ മാത്രമാണ്. എന്നാല്‍, ഒരു രാജ്യം സാമ്പത്തികശക്തിയായി ഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് ആ രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക അവസ്ഥ എന്ത് എന്നതിനെ ആശ്രയിച്ചിരിക്കും.
ഈ മാനദണ്ഡം പരിഗണിക്കപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ ഇന്ത്യ അമ്പേ പരാജയപ്പെടുകയാണ്. ഇതു മാറണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയാണ് ഇന്ത്യയെ കുരുട സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ ഒറ്റക്കണ്ണന്‍ രാജാവ് എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുകവഴി ആര്‍.ബി.ഐ ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നത്.രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക അവസ്ഥ കൂടുതല്‍ വ്യക്തമായി പ്രതിഫലിക്കുക പ്രതിശീര്‍ഷ ഉല്‍പാദനത്തിലോ പ്രതിശീര്‍ഷ വരുമാനത്തിലോ ആണ്. ഈ മാനദണ്ഡം അനുസരിച്ച് പരിശോധിക്കപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ ലോക സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്ഥാനം വളരെ താഴേക്ക് പതിക്കും. പ്രതിശീര്‍ഷ ഉല്‍പാദനം കണക്കിലെടുത്താല്‍ ബ്രിക്സ് രാജ്യങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില്‍പോലും ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്ഥാനം വളരെ താഴെയാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയെക്കാള്‍ ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള ചൈനയുടെ പ്രതിശീര്‍ഷ വാര്‍ഷിക ഉല്‍പാദനം 7590 ഡോളറാണ്. അതേസമയം, ഇന്ത്യയുടേത് 1582 ഡോളറും.

ദാരിദ്ര്യമാണ് സാമ്പത്തികശക്തിയുടെ മറ്റൊരു അളവുകോല്‍. ഇക്കാര്യത്തിലും ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്ഥിതി വളരെ പരിതാപകരമാണ്. രാജ്യത്തെ മൂന്നിലൊരാള്‍ ഇന്നും കടുത്ത ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിലാണെന്നാണ് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ കണക്കുകള്‍തന്നെ പറയുന്നത്. ഇപ്പോള്‍ നാം ആവേശംകൊള്ളുന്ന 7.5 ശതമാനം വളര്‍ച്ച അടുത്ത 20 കൊല്ലം തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി ആവര്‍ത്തിച്ചാലേ ഓരോ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരനും മാന്യമായൊരു ജീവിതം നല്‍കാന്‍ കഴിയൂ. എന്നാല്‍, ഒരു വേനലിന്‍െറ കാഠിന്യം അല്‍പംകൂടിയാല്‍ വാടിക്കരിയുന്നതാണ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ജനസംഖ്യയിലെ 75 ശതമാനം വരുന്ന കര്‍ഷകരുടെ ജീവിതം. ഇന്നും ഇവര്‍ക്ക് പ്രകൃതിയുടെ കനിവിനെ ആശ്രയിക്കാതെ കൃഷിക്ക് ആവശ്യമായ വെള്ളംപോലും ലഭ്യമാക്കാന്‍ നമുക്ക് കഴിയുന്നില്ല. എന്നാല്‍, കഴിഞ്ഞ അരനൂറ്റാണ്ടിനിടെ ചൈന ഈ കാര്യങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം നമ്മെ ബഹുദൂരം പിന്നിലാക്കി.

1960കളില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയേക്കാള്‍ ചെറുതായിരുന്നു ചൈനയുടെ സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥ. എന്നാല്‍, ഇന്ന് ഇത് ഇന്ത്യയേക്കാള്‍ അഞ്ചു മടങ്ങായി വര്‍ധിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞു. ശരാശരി ചൈനക്കാരന്‍ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരനെക്കാള്‍ നാലു മടങ്ങ് സമ്പന്നനുമാണ്.ഈ വസ്തുതകളില്‍ ഊന്നിയാണ് ലോക സമ്പദ്വ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ ഏറ്റവും തിളക്കമുള്ള താരമാണ് ഇന്ത്യയെന്ന മിഥ്യ രഘുറാം രാജന്‍ തകര്‍ക്കുന്നത്. അത് റിസര്‍വ് ബാങ്ക് ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ എന്നനിലയില്‍ മാത്രമല്ല അദ്ദേഹം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഒരു യഥാര്‍ഥ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരന്‍ എന്നനിലയില്‍ കൂടിയാണ്. ഉള്ളില്‍ ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടാണെങ്കിലും പാശ്ചാത്യരാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ അവകാശവാദങ്ങളെ പിന്താങ്ങും. ഇന്ത്യപോലുള്ള വിശാലമായൊരു വിപണി തുറക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള താക്കോല്‍ ലഭിക്കുമെന്ന ഒറ്റക്കാരണം മാത്രമാണ് അവരുടെ കൈയടികള്‍ക്ക് പിന്നിലുള്ളത്.
ഈ സത്യങ്ങള്‍ വിളിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞ ആര്‍.ബി.ഐ ഗവര്‍ണറെ കല്ളെറിയുകയല്ല വേണ്ടത്. പകരം കുരുടസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ രാജാക്കന്മാര്‍ കണ്ണുകള്‍ തുറക്കണം. യഥാര്‍ഥ വസ്തുതകള്‍ കാണാന്‍.

ന്യൂഡൽഹി: ബിജെപി എംപി സുബ്രഹ്​മണ്യൻ സ്വാമിയുടെ വിവാദ പരാമർശങ്ങൾ രണ്ടാം ദിവസവും രാജ്യസഭ രേഖകളിൽ നിന്ന്​ നീക്കം ചെയ്​തു. അലിഗഡ്​ മുസ്​ലിം സർവകലാശലയുടെ ന്യൂനപക്ഷ പദവി സംബന്ധിച്ച്​ രാജ്യസഭയിൽ ചർച്ച നടക്കുന്നതിനിടെയാണ്​ സുബ്രഹ്​മണ്യൻ സ്വാമി ഇന്ന്​ പ്രതിപക്ഷത്തെ ​പ്രകോപിപ്പിച്ചത്​. പ്രതിപക്ഷ പ്രതിഷേധത്തെ തുടർന്ന്​ സ്വാമിയു​െട പരാമർശങ്ങൾ രാജ്യസഭ രേഖകളിൽ നിന്ന്​ നീക്കി. അഗസ്​റ്റ വെസ്​റ്റ്​ലാൻഡ്​ ഹെലികോപ്​ടർ ഇടപാടുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട്​ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം രാജ്യസയഭിൽ നടന്ന ചർച്ചയിലുംസോണിയ ഗാന്ധിയു​െട പേര്​ പരാമർ​ശിച്ച്​ ​ സുബ്രഹ്​മണ്യം സ്വാമി പ്രതിപക്ഷത്തെ പ്രകോപിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.

അലിഗഡ്​ സർവകലാശാലയെക്കുറിച്ച്​ ചർച്ച നടക്കുന്നതിനിടെ സുബ്രഹ്​മണ്യൻ ഇറ്റലിയുടെ ഭരണഘടന ഉദ്ധരിച്ച്​ നടത്തിയ പരാമർശങ്ങളാണ്​ രാജ്യസഭ​ രേഖകളിൽ നിന്ന്​ പിൻവലിച്ചത്​. ശൂന്യവേളയിൽ സമാജ്​വാദി പാർട്ടിയുടെ ചൗധരിഎം സലിം അലിഗഡ്​ സർവകലാശാലയെക്കുറിച്ച്​ ചർച്ചകൾ തുടങ്ങിവെച്ചു. അലിഗഡി​െൻറ ന്യൂനപക്ഷ പദവി സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിന്​ വേണ്ടി 1970 ൽ നടന്ന സമരത്തിൽ സ്വാമിയും പങ്കാളിയായിരുന്നെന്ന്​ സലിം ചൗധരി ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി. അതേസമയം ന്യൂനപക്ഷ പദവി നൽകുന്നതിൽ തനിക്ക്​ എതിർപ്പില്ലെന്നും ന്യൂനപക്ഷ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾക്ക്​ സർക്കാർ സഹായം നൽകുന്നത്​ ഭരണഘടനാ വിരുദ്ധമാണെന്നും സ്വാമി മറുപടി നൽകി. ഇൗ വാദത്തെ പ്രതിപക്ഷം ഖണ്ഡിച്ചതോടെ സ്വാമി ഇറ്റലിയുടെ പേര്​ പരാമർശിച്ച്​ പ്രതിപക്ഷത്തെ പ്രകോപിപ്പിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പ്രതിപക്ഷം നടുത്തളത്തിലിറങ്ങി ബഹളം വെച്ചതോടെ സഭാ ഉപാധ്യക്ഷൻ പിജെ കുര്യൻ ഇടപെട്ടു. ആവശ്യമില്ലാതെ പ്രകോപനം സൃഷ്​ടിക്കുന്ന സ്വാമിക്കെതിരെ നടപടിയെടുക്കുമെന്നും പരാമർശങ്ങൾ സഭാ രേഖകളിൽ നിന്ന്​ നീക്കുമെന്നും കുര്യൻ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

അലിഗഡ്​ സർവകലാശാലയെക്കുറിച്ച്​ ചർച്ച നടക്കുന്നതിനിടെ സുബ്രഹ്​മണ്യൻ  ഇറ്റലിയുടെ ഭരണഘടന ഉദ്ധരിച്ച്​ നടത്തിയ പരാമർശങ്ങളാണ്​ രാജ്യസഭ​ രേഖകളിൽ നിന്ന്​ പിൻവലിച്ചത്​. ശൂന്യവേളയിൽ സമാജ്​വാദി പാർട്ടിയുടെ ചൗധരിഎം സലിം അലിഗഡ്​ സർവകലാശാലയെക്കുറിച്ച്​ ചർച്ചകൾ തുടങ്ങിവെച്ചു. അലിഗഡി​െൻറ ന്യൂനപക്ഷ പദവി സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിന്​ വേണ്ടി 1970 ൽ നടന്ന സമരത്തിൽ സ്വാമിയും പങ്കാളിയായിരുന്നെന്ന്​ സലിം ചൗധരി ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി. അതേസമയം ന്യൂനപക്ഷ പദവി നൽകുന്നതിൽ തനിക്ക്​ എതിർപ്പില്ലെന്നും ന്യൂനപക്ഷ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾക്ക്​ സർക്കാർ സഹായം നൽകുന്നത്​ ഭരണഘടനാ വിരുദ്ധമാണെന്നും സ്വാമി മറുപടി നൽകി. ഇൗ വാദത്തെ പ്രതിപക്ഷം ഖണ്ഡിച്ചതോടെ സ്വാമി  ഇറ്റലിയുടെ പേര്​ പരാമർശിച്ച്​ പ്രതിപക്ഷത്തെ പ്രകോപിപ്പിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.    പ്രതിപക്ഷം നടുത്തളത്തിലിറങ്ങി ബഹളം വെച്ചതോടെ സഭാ ഉപാധ്യക്ഷൻ പിജെ കുര്യൻ ഇടപെട്ടു. ആവശ്യമില്ലാതെ പ്രകോപനം സൃഷ്​ടിക്കുന്ന സ്വാമിക്കെതിരെ നടപടിയെടുക്കുമെന്നും പരാമർശങ്ങൾ സഭാ രേഖകളിൽ നിന്ന്​ നീക്കുമെന്നും കുര്യൻ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

Arvind Kejriwal Dares BJP To Arrest Sonia Gandhi In Agusta Chopper Scam

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has dared the Bharatiya Janata Party to arrest Congress President Sonia Gandhi and other leaders of the party in connection with the Rs. 3,600 crore AgustaWestland chopper scam.

He also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "silence" on the issue and wondered why CBI raids have not been conducted against Congress leaders in connection with the case.

"I dare BJP 2 arrest Sonia ji n those Cong leaders named in Italy court order n interrogate them (sic)," Mr Kejriwal tweeted on Thursday evening and went on to questions BJP's "intentions".

" BJP'll never do it. BJP's intentions are bad. For five years, BJP engaged in political rhetoric. There is a strong relationship between Congress and BJP," he said in another tweet.

This is the first instance where Mr Kejriwal directly named Sonia Gandhi. He had previously refrained from naming Mrs Gandhi ever since the row erupted in Parliament. oduvil

Earlier on Thursday, the Aam Aadmi Party chief questioned whether those named in the Italian court order should not be immediately arrested and interrogated.

"Why is the PM silent on Agusta? First BJP spared Vadra, now protecting entire Congress top brass in Augusta?" the Delhi Chief Minister said on twitter, referring to Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra.


He also tweeted, "Shudn't those named in Italy court order be immediately arrested n interrogated? CBI raid had been conducted on me, but why there is no raid at Congress persons (sic)."

How A Firm Linked To Karti Chidambaram Earned A Fortune From Sequoia

NEW DELHI: One of the world's best-known venture capital firms, Sequoia Capital, is now part of a vast investigation into alleged money-laundering by Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

Documents reviewed by NDTV indicate that the Enforcement Directorate, which looks at financial crimes, has zoomed in to two transactions where Sequoia paid Rs. 32.9 crores for shares that just two years before were worth only three crores. The windfall gain on the shares of Vasan Health Care - which runs clinics across Tamil Nadu - was made by a company in 2010 - that was indirectly owned by Karti Chidambaram.

Sequoia's India office in Bengaluru was raided earlier this month by the Enforcement Directorate, which also questioned its Managing Director VT Bharadwaj, who reportedly said that there was no valuation report done for Vasan Health Care to determine the real worth of its shares.

The Enforcement Directorate says the baffling price paid by Seqouia is incongruent with what its own auditors, Suresh and Company, estimated. They said the value of a Vasan share was Rs. 110, but just over a week later, the venture capital firm picked up those same shares for a massive premium.

With the huge profits it made, the company indirectly owned by Karti Chidambaram, Advantage Strategic Consulting Services, then sent its Singapore branch on a global shopping spree, claims the Enforcement Directorate.

The agency has sent letters to Singapore authorities for details of the company, and to 12 countries in which Advantage Singapore has dealings, including France, UK, and South Africa.

Amid a row surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications, Congress alleged “discrepancies” in his date of birth.

It also questioned the timing of Gujarat University sharing details of Modi’s MA degree which it had earlier refused to disclose citing secrecy.

“In students’ register of M N College Visnagar (where Modi took admission in pre-science, equivalent to class XII) Sri Narendra Modi’s date of birth is mentioned as August 29, 1949. In his election affidavit, he did not reveal his date of birth, but mentioned his age. His official birth date, as available in the public domain, is September 17, 1950,” senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil said.

He showed a copy of the purported school register which mentioned the PM’s name as Narendrakumar Damodardas Modi, along with his date of birth.

“We want to know what is the reason behind different dates of birth, what is the date of birth on his (Modi’s) passport, on the PAN card and on other documents? And what is the reason behind different dates of birth?” Gohil said.

“Modi, in his affidavit filed before the returning officer in 2014 (Lok Sabha polls), had stated that he pursued his BA from Delhi University and MA from Gujarat University. In the same affidavit, he, for the first time, revealed his marital status as married to Jasodaben,” he said.

Taking a swipe at Modi over his “56-inch chest” remarks, the senior Congress leader said, “The country does not have much interest in knowing PM’s 56-inch chest, but public has interest in knowing his date of birth... where he got his BA degree from, when, and at least names of 10 students who studied with him”.

Gujarat University on Sunday shared details of Modi’s MA degree, saying he scored 62.3 per cent as an external student of the varsity after Central Information Commission directed it to provide the same to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who had recently criticised the functioning of the transparency panel.

Questioning the timing of the disclosure by the varsity, Gohil said, “Till today, at least 70 RTIs were filed in GU seeking the same information, but the reply was always
‘information is secret, can’t be revealed’. After CIC asked GU to give reply, overnight it turned vibrant, progressive, and instead of calling it secret, it decided to give information along with marks.”

“How come GU does not have details of his (Modi’s) BA degree? Because while getting admission in MA, he should have given his BA details. If you migrated from DU to GU, your migration certificate should also be there with the GU,” he said.

Intolerance in India rose in 2015, says USCIRF


NEW DELHI: Religious freedom in India was on a "negative trajectory" in 2015 as religious tolerance "deteriorated" and religious freedom violations "increased", alleged US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in its 2016 annual report.
The USCIRF suggested that the Indian government publicly rebuke officials and religious leaders that make derogatory statements about religious communities.

Pointing out that it will continue to monitor the situation closely during 2016 to understand if India should be recommended to the State Department for designation as a "country of particular concern," USCIRF advised the US government to integrate concern for religious freedom into bilateral contacts with India, including the framework of future Strategic Dialogues.
USCIRF reports are not binding on the State Department. Interestingly the report comes a little more than a month before PM Narendra Modi's bilateral visit to Washington where he is also scheduled to address joint session of the US Congress.
"In 2015, religious tolerance deteriorated and religious freedom violations increased in India," the report said. "Minority communities, especially Christians, Muslims, and Sikhs, experienced numerous incidents of intimidation, harassment, and violence, largely at the hands of Hindu nationalist groups," the report alleged.


USCIRF alleged that members of the ruling BJP tacitly supported these groups and used religiouslydivisive language to further inflame tensions.
"These issues, combined with longstanding problems of police bias and judicial inadequacies, have created a pervasive climate of impunity, where religious minority communities feel increasingly insecure, with no recourse when religiously-motivated crimes occur," the report alleged.

Earlier this year members of USCIRF was denied visas by the Indian government as was done by the UPA regime in the past. Interestingly though Katrina Lantos Swett, a commissioner at the USCIRF visited Dharamshala last week to attend a meet of Chinese dissidents.
USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan US federal government commission, the first of its kind in the world, dedicated to defending the universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad.
