| Demonetisation effect: PM Modi can win 360 seats, UPA just 60 if national polls are held today, says India Today Survey The mood of the nation is with Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government if an India Today-Karvy survey is to be believed. According to the survey, Modi-led NDA can win as many as 360 seats if General Elections are held today, while the Congress-led UPA would be restricted to 60 seats. The survey shows that demonetisation decision of the Modi government has increased the PM’s popularity all across the country. The extensive survey was conducted across 19 states from the end of demonetisation deadline on December 30 until January 9. It was found that the NDA can win up to 42% votes, that will translate into 360 seats in the Lok Sabha, if General Elections are held today. In contrast, Congress-led UPA can get just 25% votes, while others can get up to 33% votes. As far as the best Prime Ministerial candidate in the country is considered, PM Modi is way ahead of the competitors with 65% votes in the survey. Modi’s popularity graph remained undisturbed throughout 2016 even in the face of a vicious campaign against him after demonetisation by opposition parties. In a similar survey in August 2016, it was found that the NDA could win 40% seats, while now it has increased up to 42%. This also shows there was no effect of demonetisation on his popularity as India’s top leader. For the upcoming Assembly elections, another poll conducted by THE WEEK-Hansa Research has predicted that the BJP would emerge as the largest single party in Uttar Pradesh and Goa, and the Congress in Punjab. According to THE WEEK-Hansa Research, 192 to 196 seats can go to BJP in Uttar Pradesh, while SP-Congress alliance will come a close second with 178-182, the BSP a poor third with 20 to 24 seats, and others 5 to 9. “In Punjab, the opinion poll predicts the Congress emerging as the largest single party with 49 to 51 seats in an assembly of 117 seats, and AAP finishing second with 33 to 35 seats. The Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance scores only 28 to 30 seats, and others 3 to 5 seats.” Of these four states, a clear majority has been predicted only in Uttrakhand, with BJP likely to clinch 37 to 39 seats in the 70-member House, while the ruling Congress is expected to get 27 to 29 seats. The BSP is likely to bag 1 to 3 seats, the poll said, adding other smaller parties also will net 1 to 3 seats. In Goa, out of the total 40 seats, the ruling BJP is likely to garner 17 to 19 seats, followed by the Congress 11 to 13, the poll predicted, while giving new challenger AAP only 2 to 4 seats. The alliance led by Maharashtra Gomantak Party is expected to get 3 to 5 seats. Independents are likely to win a maximum of 2 seats, and others 1 to 3 seats, it said. This opinion poll was held a week ago, immediately after the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance was firmed up, according to a release. | |

| Yogi Adityanath Orders Cops To Start Work On Banning Slaughterhouses LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, racing through his poll promises within three days of taking charge, today directed police officers to prepare an action plan to shut down slaughterhouses. He has also ordered a blanket ban on cattle smuggling and said there must be "zero tolerance" in such cases. Officers say the ban will be restricted to illegal slaughterhouses. Slaughterhouses allegedly running without permits have been shut down in Allahabad, Varanasi, Agra and Ghaziabad over the past two days. There have been reports of inspections across the state. The BJP, which won a giant-sized victory in Uttar Pradesh, had said in its manifesto that illegal slaughterhouses and large, mechanised abattoirs would be closed. But party chief Amit Shah had said while campaigning that the aim was to shut down slaughterhouses, which led to confusion. The BJP manifesto also focused on ending cattle smuggling, calling it the reason dairy-based industries have failed to flourish in UP. The party said there has been a "fall in cattle count" during the previous Samajwadi Party rule. In his orders, Yogi Adityanath also directed the police to act tough against anti-social elements. He warned that those using police security as a "status symbol" would be watched and their security could be changed based on a review of the threat they face. | |

| Why Adityanath as CM makes seculars and Congress uncomfortable The selection of Yogi Adityanath as UP chief minister has shocked many. Like many, I too am uneasy to see sadhus mixed up in politics just as mullahs and padres talking politics makes me uncomfortable. But I refuse to be prejudiced. The mainstream English media, which has grown simultaneously with the amorphous secularist ideology of the Congress party, see doomsday looming with the elevation of a Hindutva archpriest as the chief minister of India's most populous state. Forgetting the Gorakhpur MP is a leader on his own merit, with loyal followers, they tend to blame Narendra Modi for Adityanath's rise. They do not seem to factor in Modi's own limitations in exercising monolithic control over the BJP's decision-making process. Modi is probably ready to trade off his stand on some issues, as long as they serve the larger interests of the party without compromising his overall strategic agenda. Some of the contradictions between what Modi says and how he acts would indicate this. Probably, Modi had to go with the selection of Adityanath as the chief minister, because the Gorakhpur MP's electioneering skills contributed hugely to the BJP's resounding victory in the Assembly elections. Perhaps, this was also the reason for the overwhelming support Adityanath enjoys among the UP BJP leaders and the MLAs. The opposition does not seem to bother to understand why the BJP opted for Adityanath as the chief minister. They only see him as a rabble-rouser preaching the gospel of hate. This only indicates their failure to understand the popular backlash in the state against the Akhilesh government's pro-Muslim tilt, ignoring the needs of the majority. This is what caused their failure in the UP polls, not the saffron-clad Adityanath's vitriolic speeches. We saw the same syndrome - failure to read the public mood - in Assam too, where people opted for BJP, though the party was a non-entity in the state before the Assembly polls. Mamata Banerjee is also making the same mistake in West Bengal; in her case, it is fast becoming a national security concern as the state has become a refuge for Islamic extremists escaping the crackdown against them in Bangladesh. Even the Bangladesh government has expressed its concern in this regard. The basic problem of the opposition is its understanding of the RSS. It is popular for them and the intellectual class to accept the Left-leaning forces' description of the Sangh as a fascist force. Of course, the Left has conveniently forgotten its own ideology is wedded to the proletarian dictatorship owing to the socio-democratic cloak it now wears like the proverbial wolf in Red Riding Hood. The RSS is a cadre-based conservative religious organisation wedded to propagate Hindutva, a concept it believes should apply to the people of India. In spite of the popular branding of RSS, during my military service in disaster-hit areas, I had seen RSS cadres working hard to help the affected, irrespective of their religion. Of course, the RSS has its organisational rigidity; I have my doubts whether its set-up is democratically-elected. But in this country, few political parties function democratically. Perhaps, they are following the Mahatma's tradition of dictatorially conducting the Congress party's affairs. Following the same tradition, the Congress party now pays obeisance to another set of Gandhis, who continue to call the shots, despite their repeated leadership failures. Just as the Gandhis are above the others in the Congress, in Samajwadi Party, it is Mulayam Singh Yadav and his clan. And about the Dravidian parties' sycophantic traditions, the less said the better. The opposition fears the RSS because it challenges their so-called secularist political style, based on the "vote bank" politics of dishing out favours to Muslims and Dalits to keep them in their flock. This clouds the judgment of the Congress party (and its regional copy cats) and other pseudo-socialists like the SP in making an objective assessment of the RSS and its umbilical relations with the BJP. The BJP also practises "vote bank" politics, selectively, when political pragmatism overtakes its ideology. But it listens to the RSS when it suits the party, as is the case in UP. Adityanath, despite his strong RSS pedigree (much like Modi), has shown he has fully imbibed BJP's political pragmatism as shown in his Cabinet formation. While assessing Adityanath, the opposition should not forget that the UP chief minister has now emerged as a seasoned politician, as much as the practising priest that he is. | Bihar CM may join hands with NDA, Narendra Modi: Sources Patna: In what seems to be a change of stance, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar could join hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), sources close to the development said. As per the sources, top Janata Dal (United) (JDU) leaders are currently in talks BJP to mend fences, amid indifferences with current ally RJD, headed by Lalu Prasad Yadav. While reports about the Bihar chief minister joining the saffron camp is just mere speculation, there are possibilities of such a development, as Kumar was one of the chief ministers who came out openly in support of demonetisation and other such schemes launched by the government. Kumar’s JD(U) was a part of the NDA earlier for over 17 years but he walked out of it in 2013 when Modi was declared the prime ministerial candidate of the NDA. All the speculations arise after top leaders of the BJP attended an official dinner at Kumar’s residence in Patna. Kumar had also congratulated the BJP securing a sweeping victory in Uttar Pradesh, saying that the ‘poor voted for the BJP. He also criticised the other parties, including Congress, explaining that they should not have raised a finger at the government’s note ban exercise. In hindsight, the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ or the Grand Alliance in Bihar has witnessed difference of opinions from the leaders of two biggest parties in the coalition that defeated the BJP in 2015. While RJD’s Lalu Yadav constantly campaigned for the SP-Congress alliance in Uttar Pradesh, it has to be noted that Nitish Kumar did not endorse the coalition, even though Congress is part of the grand alliance in Bihar. | Moody's Upgrades India Rating After 13 Years Betting On PM Modi's Reforms, Markets Up Moody's Investors Service raised India's sovereign rating for the first time since 2004, overlooking a haze of short-term economic uncertainties to bet on the nation's prospects from a raft of policy changes by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The rupee, bonds and stocks rallied after the ratings firm upgraded India to Baa2 from Baa3 and said reforms being pushed through by PM Modi's government will help stabilize rising levels of debt. That's a one-level shift from the lowest investment-grade ranking and puts India in line with the Philippines and Italy. "This is an overdue correction," PM Modi's Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian told Bloomberg Quint, referring to the upgrade. "This is a recognition of India's macro economic reforms. But it has also to be kept in mind that these are external factors. And the government will pursue its own reform agenda. And those will drive our economic development." baa2 economies bloomberg Some investors termed it a surprise given that India recently surrendered its status as the world's fastest-growing major economy amid sweeping policy change. The upgrade could prove to be a big win for ruling party BJP, which has faced increasing attacks about the economic slowdown before key elections in PM Modi's home state Gujarat next month. "This is a positive surprise to the markets, especially in terms of timing," said Vivek Rajpal, a rates strategist at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Singapore. "One fear that was developing in the market was debt-flow positioning." The rupee surged as much as 1 percent to 64.67 per dollar in Mumbai while the yield on the 10-year sovereign bond tumbled 11 basis points to 6.96 percent and the benchmark equity index rose 1.25 percent. Markets have welcomed the move, with the Sensex rising over 400 points on Friday morning at 33,520 and the Nifty gaining 120 points. Ease of Business PM Modi has pushed through sweeping reforms, with mixed results. Last year's removal from circulation of almost 90 percent of the nation's currency weighed on growth. Expansion in gross domestic product slipped below 6 percent in the April-June quarter, sparking expectations that the government will need to announce a fiscal stimulus package to boost activity. Other measures -- such as efforts to cut red tape and the imposition of a new consumption tax -- have met with mixed success. The government won praise from ratings firms for a $32 billion program to recapitalize banks that economists say will revive lending and stoke demand on the ground. The World Bank has acknowledged it's getting easier to do business in India, with Asia's third-largest economy jumping 30 places to rank 100th in the latest ranking released last month. Earlier this week, Pew Research Center said PM Modi remained a popular leader and public confidence in the economy and the overall direction had improved. Moody's cited the goods and services tax, which it said will promote productivity by removing barriers to interstate trade, improvements to the monetary policy framework, measures to clean up non-performing loans, and efforts to bring more areas into the formal economy. budget deficit bloomberg "While India's high debt burden remains a constraint on the country's credit profile, Moody's believes that the reforms put in place have reduced the risk of a sharp increase in debt, even in potential downside scenarios," according to the firm's release. It noted most of the measures will take time for their impact to be felt, while some -- such as GST and demonetization -- have undermined growth in the near term. Moody's forecast GDP growth of 6.7 percent for the fiscal year ended March 2018, with a pick up to 7.5 percent in the following year and "similarly robust" levels from 2019 onward. Those are likely to help restore some investor confidence in Indian assets after a big sell-off in the past few weeks. Moody's is looking through the near-term political cycle ahead of state polls when "populism may overshadow reform momentum," according to Vishnu Varathan, Singapore-based head of economics and strategy at Mizuho Bank Ltd. The afterglow from the upgrade won't last long given the emerging signs of quickening inflation and a widening current account and fiscal deficit, Varathan said | |
