Kerala government would look into demands of renaming the state as Keralam — its Malayalam pronunciation — CM V S Achuthanandan told the state assembly on Wednesday.
The CM, who was replying to CPM MLA Babu M Palisserya's submission, said a final decision on this would be taken after a consensus is evolved after detailed discussions with the experts.
Pallissery said there were demands from different sections to rename the state. "They are asking if Bombay could be Mumbai, why not Keralam? The colonial spelling of places like Trichur had been changed to Thrissur and Calicut to Kozhikode. There is no justification in not correcting the state's official spelling," said the MLA. The state had constituted a committee headed by a minister to consider the issue of changing names so they match their Malayalam pronunciation.
Some industry players, however, expressed reservations over the move. "We still don't seem to have learnt any lesson. Tourists are asking whether Kochi and Cochin are same. Also, they cannot pronounce Thiruvananthapuram," said Kerala Travels MD K C Chandrahasan.
