| Mr Mathew played a lead role in the growth of Malayala Manorama and his ideas and thoughts helped the group to scale new heights. The nation honoured him with Padmabushan in 1998. He has served as the chairman of Press Trust of India.

Kottayam: KM Mathew, Chief Editor of Malayala Manorama passed away. The end came today morning at his residence here. He was 93. Cremation would take place on Monday 4pm at Puthanpally Church here. The body would be kept at Malayala Manorama headquarters here for the public to pay last respects, tommorow. He took over as Managing Editor of Malayala Manorama in 1954 and was serving as chief editor since 1973.
Mr Mathew played a lead role in the growth of Malayala Manorama and his ideas and thoughts helped the group to scale new heights. The nation honoured him with Padmabushan in 1998. He has served as the chairman of Press Trust of India. Mathew had played a key role in making Malayala Manorama one of the major Indian language dailies after he took over the reins of the media house. Some of the major honours attained by him include Foundation of freedom of information award (1991), National citizens award (1992), Kerala press academy award (1997)
He has penned two books Ettamathe Mothiram (Autobiography) and Annamma, a work on his wife. Several prominent personalities including Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan, Sonia Gandhi, AICC president, Oommen Chandy, opposition leader, Union Ministers AK Antony, Vayalar Ravi, Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI (M) state secretary expressed deep regret over the demise of Mr Mathew.
