Rajastan Royals v/s Kings xl Punjab

Sreesanth will be on a different pitch before Rajasthan Royals' opening match against Kings XI Punjab today at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. Along with his experimental music band, S 36 (S for Sreesanth and 36 is his jersey number) Sreesanth will perform as part of the pre-game concert. The band that he started along with his brother-in-law and friends in 2010 will also render a new version of ‘Halla Bol', the official anthem of Rajasthan Royals.

Sreesanth, the cricketer and Sreesanth, the musician; how different are they?

Both are the same. On the field I have to be calm, composed and focused but you will still see me being very enthusiastic and energetic. Sreesanth the musician also has the same qualities.

How do you balance a career as challenging as cricket and music?

It gets really tough sometimes, especially with the hectic travelling schedule. My band members have been very cooperative and have given me the liberty to be part of the practise sessions whenever it is possible. I'm trying my best to balance both, even though cricket will always be my priority.

Do you feel both worlds complement each other someway? Are there lessons you have learnt from music that you have used in cricket or vice-versa?

Definitely. Cricket is all about focus, dedication and undying devotion for the sport. So is music. You cannot become a musician overnight. Every cricketer needs music to de-stress and I'm sure every musician follows some sport as well!

How do you de-stress?

Music, dance, movies…these are my stress busters. I've always been passionate about my music and thanks to S-36 I can now pursue it. I usually plug on my earphones between matches, while waiting for my turn in the pavilion. If cricket is my life, music is my oxygen.

How have fans reacted to your music?

Fans have been receptive and encouraging, not just during our performances but even on social networks. I feel elated every time someone appreciates our music. As I always maintain, S-36 is not my band but a people's band.

How long have you been working on the RR's anthem and how does it feel to open RR's this IPL season with your band's performance?

It feels great but I'm a little nervous. We know what kind of turnout IPL matches generate. Being a Rajasthan Royals player, I feel privileged to get an opportunity to perform for the home crowd. We've been working on the anthem for quite some time and have tweaked the lyrics and music a little. You could call it a metal version of ‘Halla Bol'. We hope people like it.

S36 will perform April 6 between 6.20 p.m. and 7.20 p.m., just before the team's first match against Kings XI Punjab
