At Make-In-India Show, Mangalyaan is a Star

NEW DELHI: At Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make-In-India" event, the success of Mangalyaan, or Mars mission, was held up as an example of the country's potential.

"Nobody can question the talent of our people, especially after yesterday's Mars mission. The parts of the Mangalyaan were made in small factories in India. it proves there is no death of talent," PM Modi said, a day after he witnessed Mangalyaan successfully enter the orbit of Mars.

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani had earlier said Mangalyaan had shown what India can achieve. "India's Mars mission cost less than Rs. 7 per km, which is less than the cost of travel by an auto in major Indian cities," he said.

On Wednesday, PM Modi had also marveled that the mission cost less than a Hollywood movie.

ICICI bank chief Chanda Kocchar also referenced Mangalyaan. "Today, with a lot of pride we can all stand here and claim that it is India's indigenous technology on Mars. This was achieved in just $74 million," she said.

Mangalyaan is the cheapest inter-planetary mission ever. At Rs. 450 crore, it costs just about Rs. 4 per person in India.

BJP-Shiv Sena Alliance Over, Say Sources; Announcement Soon

MUMBAI: The BJP has called off its 25-year-old alliance with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, sources said today. A formal announcement is expected soon.

"Talks are on. Wait for further developments," Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said when the two parties seemed to be making a last-ditch attempt at reconciliation.

But another national leader had earlier said, "As far as we are concerned, the alliance is over."

The strong words spurred a Sena move; its leaders said talks were not over.

"We are calm. We are waiting for an announcement if any. As of now, talks are still on," said a top Sena source.

The rival Congress-led alliance is also on the verge of splitting, with strong indications that Sharad Pawar's NCP or Nationalist Congress Party is in touch with the BJP. Last night, the Congress went ahead and released a list of 180 candidates.

The campaign, he said, "is the step of a lion." The logo is a striding lion made of cogs, symbolising manufacturing, strength and national pride. The Make in India campaign aims at turning the country into a global manufacturing hub by smoothening business processes and attracting foreign companies to set up factories in India and invest in the country's infrastructure. About 500 top CEOs, including leading lights of India Inc, listened intently as Mr Modi outlined his vision. Good governance, he said, was not enough. There must be "effective governance that investors must feel."

The PM emphasised on a need to rebuild investors' trust and provide them with a better investment climate. "Incentive isn't enough, we need a climate for growth," Mr Modi said promising faster decision making and a better policy environment for global and domestic corporates.

Improving the ease of doing business was a priority, the PM said. And that the country must rise to number 50 in the world on that count. Right now India ranks 134th out of 189 countries on ease of doing business, according to the World Bank.

2) Do not treat India as a market: PM Modi said global businesses have always viewed India as a big market, but Indians lack purchasing power. Investors will lose an opportunity, if they continue to look at India as a market, he said. The Prime Minister said the faster people move out of poverty, the faster India's purchasing power will grow.

3) Do not leave India: Trust forced Indian companies to leave the country in the last few years, PM Modi said. "A trust was broken that when a policy will be changed, when CBI will come...this is what I heard from all you," PM Modi said. We do not want any industrialist being forced to leave India, he added.

4) Government to ensure capital preservation: Investors first want security of their investment, followed by growth, while profit is the last priority, PM Modi said. The new government will ensure the preservation of capital, he said.

5) Improving the ease of doing business a priority: According to World Bank, India ranks 134 out of 189 countries in terms of the ease of doing business. PM Modi today said that his government will see that the country climbs quickly to 50th position on the list.

6) India best destination to invest in Asia: The world is looking at Asia. I do not have to waste time to invite...I need to give the address, PM Modi said. Only India has the unique combination of democracy, demographic dividend and demand, he added.

7) Easy governance, effective governance: The "Digital India" push is aimed at effective governance, PM Modi said. Industry does not come when there are too many incentive schemes. A development & growth oriented environment is need, he added.

8) Skilled manpower: India needs manpower according to requirements and if we can develop the right skills, we can achieve sustainable development, PM Modi said.

9) Look East, but Link West: India needs to pursue the Look East policy, but also absorb the best practices of the western world, PM Modi said.

10) Infrastructure: India needs better infrastructure for further growth, the PM said, adding there is a need for not only highways, but also i-highways (information highways). The country needs electric, water, gas and optical fibre grids, he added.

Not An Empty Chair, But PM Modi Live: 'Sweet Revenge' For Indians in New York



NEW YORK: In 2005, an empty chair at New York's Madison Square Garden represented Narendra Modi for thousands of Indians who had come to meet him. Nine years on, as India's Prime Minister, Mr Modi will finally keep his date with his audience.

"This is sweet revenge for all of us in the US," said Raj Bhayani, a New York-based ENT surgeon who stays in a penthouse at Manhattan.

"In 2005, as Gujarat Chief Minister, he was about to visit New York. We had organized a community reception for him at the same location. But after his visa was revoked, we didn't know what to do. We had paid a deposit. People wanted to come in. So we kept an empty chair on the podium for Narendrabhai."

On Sunday, he is expected to draw the largest crowd ever by a foreign leader on US soil when he takes the stage in New York's most famous sports and entertainment arena. Some 18,000 people are expected to pack Madison Square Garden.

"We had tremendous demand for tickets. We knew that it will be overwhelming," said Bharat Barai, one of the organisers.

Some Indians have prepared a song for the occasion, starring Mr Modi and his rise to power after a remarkable election victory.

The musical tribute begins with "Bigul Bajaa Hai Jeet Ka (the bugle of victory has been sounded)" and shows snapshots of Mr Modi in various shades - the crowd-puller, the PM with a vision and the global leader.

Thousands are also expected to watch PM Modi's address on the big screens at New York's Times Square.

Mr Modi, 64, was denied a visa in 2005, three years after religious riots in Gujarat, the state he ruled for 13 years till he took over as Prime Minister in May.

Soon after Mr Modi won the election, the US courted him and said he would be welcomed in America.

The logo is the silhouette of a lion on the prowl, made entirely of cogs, symbolising manufacturing, strength and national pride. The national emblem, Ashok Chakra, also has four lions.

In Indian folklore, the lion denotes the attainment of enlightenment, besides representing power, courage, pride and confidence.

The lion logo adorns the brand new website - makeinindia.com - for the campaign and all its brochures.

The website is a ready reckoner for data on 25 sectors that are looking to attract companies to India. It also lists new initiatives of the government, facts on Foreign Direct Investment and intellectual property rights. The site gives contact details for a new investor facilitation cell and invites companies to fill a form where they can simply explain their proposal and potential investment.
