Latching on to the CAG report on Gujarat during his tenure, Congress will seek to corner Prime Minister Narendra Modi government in Parliament next week. An indication to this was given by party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi who insisted that the CAG report on Gujarat is not a state issue and it affects the whole nation.

"CAG issue is a very serious issue. Issues like bugging, which the government has so far refused to discuss, has consumed much of our time. But we will raise it," Singhvi said accusing Modi for "benefiting select corporates" in the state when he was Chief Minister.

Releasing a six-page document at the AICC briefing, which carried findings of the CAG report, the Congress spokesperson said that the CAG has "slammed" the Gujarat government in five different audit reports.

Asked how can an issue concerned with an state raised in Parliament, Singhvi insisted that it is not a state issue but "national issue" as it concerns "severe mismanagement of state's financial resources amounting to Rs 25,000 crore" and also because the CAG is a Constitutional body.

"The audit watchdog points out that the state's fiscal liability (or debt burden), which was around Rs 50,000 crore during BJP-ruled Keshubhai Patel regime rose astronomically after the Narendra Modi government took charge. According to the CAG, it rose to Rs 1.05 lakh crore in 2008-2009 and was Rs 1.66 lakh crore in 2012-2013," Singhvi said.

He said this way, the debt of Gujarat cannot be paid back two, three or four generations even as "Modi talks about internal resource generation in his meetings". Singhvi rued that when Congress MLAs tried to raise the issue of CAG report in Gujarat assembly, they were suspended and a debate was not allowed.

The CAG in its report has come down heavily on the then Modi-led Gujarat government for financial mismanagement of resources and benefiting selected corporates in the state.

Modi’s popular slogan, ‘Acche din aane wale hain’ is losing sheen because the people of India have not been able to see any indication of the good days as promised by him.

Rail fares have been hiked, the price of petrol is also touching a new high and onion-potato prices are rising while tomato has briefly touched Rs 100 a kg in some cities.  

The monsoon has also ditched the new government at the Centre. May be price rise was a big reason for BJP losing ground in Uttarakhand.  

The opposition has also launched a scathing attack on Modi government for making tall promises but not delivering on anyone of them. It is not only Uttararakhand but in Bihar also indications are bad for the BJP.

Goel's U-turn:       

If other states are developed people won't come to Delhi: BJP MP Vijay Goel's quick U-turn from his statement that the inflow of migrants into Delhi needs to be stopped to solve the problems of the capital.

Goel said he meant that if other states are developed then people won't have to come to Delhi. "I have been misquoted," he said.

Yesterday Goel said, "Every day more migrants come to Delhi... Most of them are from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. They come here because they don't have employment opportunities in their states," Goel said.

Both the BJP and the Congress have slammed the MP for his statement.

With the home minister's long speech delivered without simultaneous translation or without an English version being made available for the audience, notable attendees like Frederika Meijer, UNFPA representative (India and Bhutan), and David Mcloughlin, deputy representative (programmes), UNICEF India, were left clueless — and they looked it.
Meijer and Mcloughlin were on the dais and they both told ET the minister's speech was incomprehensible to them. "What did he say?" Meijer asked. "I would request for a translated copy of the speech if possible," Mcloughlin said. Some foreign delegates in the audience also said they didn't understand what the minister had said.

Singh's boss, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made it a point to speak in Hindi at most events, domestic or foreign. But translators are at hand when the PM speaks to a foreign leader or to a foreign audience. No such facility was available when the home minister decided to speak in Hindi at the UNFPA event. And his decision stood out in sharp contrast to other Indian speakers at the event.Singh's junior minister, Kiren Rijiju and the home secretary, Anil Goswami, both spoke in English.
