A day after the Nobel Prize in physics was won by the scientists who invented blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the power ministry Wednesday launched a business model enabling the sale of LEDs to households at Rs.10 against the market price of Rs.400.

“The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) together with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), which is a joint venture of four central public sector undertakings in the power sector, have worked with electricity distribution companies (discoms) to develop a business model under which EESL procures LED bulbs in bulk and sells them to households at Rs.10,” an official release here said.

“The discoms then repay EESL, over a period of five to eight years from the savings that accrue due to use of this energy efficient lighting technology,” it added.

Under an MoU between EESL and the Andhra Pradesh government, EESL last week completed the procurement of two million LEDs, the statement said.

“Almost the entire lighting industry participated in the bid and the lowest quoted price was Rs.204 per LED bulb,” it added.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Thursday launched the Energy Conservation Mission’s Demand Side Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) in the state, which promotes replacement of incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. The DELP is covering 3.7 million households, who will be provided with two high quality LED bulbs each at a subsidized price of Rs.10.

The programme started in Guntur, to be followed by Anantapur, West Godavari and Srikakulam districts.

The union power ministry has already decided that all below-poverty line households at the time of electrification under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyuthikaran Yojana (RGGVY) would be provided LED technology.

LEDs are emerging as the most energy-efficient source of lighting as they use one-tenth of the energy of a normal incandescent bulb and half as much energy as a Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) to produce the same amount of light.

The first LED lamp made in India, in 2010, was sold for Rs.1,200, the ministry said.

EESL has already completed a number of projects to retrofit existing streetlights to LED streetlights as well as a 750,000 LED bulb replacement project for households in Pudhuchery, the statement said.

“Increase in domestic demand would further reduce cost of LED bulbs with larger production capacities getting created in India,” it said.

All lighting manufacturers have established domestic manufacturing facilities for LED-based lighting system, and have started training programmes for engineers and demonstration programmes in various buildings to showcase this technology, it added.

PM Modi Launches Village Development Project

NEW DELHI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the 'Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana', a village development project under which each member of parliament will take the responsibility of developing physical and institutional infrastructure in three villages by 2019.

At the launch in New Delhi, PM Modi said,"We are nearly 800 MPs. If before 2019, we develop three villages each, we reach nearly 2,500 villages. If in the light of this scheme, the states also create a similar scheme for MLAs, then 6000-7000 more villages can be added."

The Prime Minister added that if one village is developed in a block, it is also likely to have a "viral" effect and development would permeate other villages too.

PM Modi remarked that the scheme is flexible and that an MP is free to choose any village. The only condition is that it should not be his own village or that of his in-laws.

"I also have to choose a village in Varanasi," the Prime Minister said and added that he would go there, discuss and choose a village.

Till now, the model of development being followed in the country has largely been supply-driven, PM Modi said.

"In Delhi, Lucknow or Gandhinagar, a scheme is prepared and then an attempt is made to inject it everywhere. Through this 'Adarsh Gram' (scheme), we want to shift from supply-driven to demand-driven model," he said.

He also said that an atmosphere should be created where every person is proud of his or her village.

NEW DELHI:  Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, usually uniformed in jeans, a t-shirt and sneakers (hoodie optional), was on Friday in a dark-coloured suit and tie to meet with the Prime Minister.

On Thursday, the 30-year-old said his social media network wants to help  the PM connect remote villages to the Internet.

He said India had huge potential, with only around 243 million of its people currently online.

"With more than one billion people still to be connected, India is just at the beginning. It is not only a challenge for Facebook but for everybody," he told a conference in New Delhi.

Mr Zuckerberg is on a two-day visit to India aimed at promoting the internet.org app, which allows people in underdeveloped areas to access basic online services.

"We believe that connectivity is a human right and one of the fundamental challenges for our generation," Mr Zuckerberg said in Delhi.

He denied accusations he is seeking to create a monopoly in access to online content in the developing world, saying mobile operators were free to decide which services they included, and did not have to include Facebook.

He said the app, which Facebook launched in Zambia earlier this year in cooperation with Samsung and other partners, will not be available immediately in India.

"India is such an important country with so many people that we didn't want to start here with the risk of not doing well," said Zuckerberg.

Mr Zuckerberg said Facebook is now "focusing on content in local languages" to address the needs of Indians in different parts of the country.

PM Narendra Modi Orders Clean Up of Venue After Rally, Crowd Complies

GURGAON: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today ended his campaign for the upcoming Haryana polls by urging voters in Millennium City Gurgaon to not just clean up the state, but also 'promise' to clean up the venue before leaving.

Interestingly, most of those who attended the rally did keep their promise. The crowd could be seen collecting garbage and cleaning up the venue much after the prime minister left.

The prime minister also nominated nine prominent Indians to spread awareness on cleanliness as part of the five-year campaign launched on the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Perhaps Mr Modi was taking a cue from the Shiv Sena workers, who earlier this week cleaned the Mahalaxmi racecourse ground in Mumbai a day after he addressed an election rally there. Sena workers arrived with brooms and buckets and cleaned the ground, collecting leftover water bottles and campaign flags and banners.

PM Narendra Modi Orders Clean Up of Venue After Rally, Crowd Complies

GURGAON:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi today ended his campaign for the upcoming Haryana polls by urging voters in Millennium City Gurgaon to not just clean up the state, but also 'promise' to clean up the venue before leaving.

Interestingly, most of those who attended the rally did keep their promise. The crowd could be seen collecting garbage and cleaning up the venue much after the prime minister left.
