Export growth shrinks 14 % in April
rade deficit widens to $10.99 b in April against $10.09 b a year earlier but was narrower than March figure of $11.79 b.
Contracting for the fifth straight month, India’s export growth shrank 14 per cent in April to $22.05 billion. Exports growth had slid to 21 per cent in March, the biggest fall in the last six years.
Persistent exports weakness — owing to lacklustre global demand — could weigh down growth. Exports account for about 16 per cent of India’s GDP. GDP data for the three-month period January to March is scheduled to be released on May 29. Last year, at $310.5 billion, India’s exports fell short of the annual target of $340 billion for 2014-15.
A 42.65-per cent decline in oil imports to $7.44 billion dragged overall imports to $33.05 billion or 7.48 per cent lower than in March, according to official data released on Friday.
The trade deficit widened to $10.99 billion in April against $10.09 billion a year earlier, but was narrower than March’s $11.79 billion.
Exports of petroleum products shrank sharply by 46.53 per cent to $2.76 billion in April. Non-oil imports, however, rose 12.58 per cent to $25.60 billion.
Gold imports, however, surged 78.33 per cent to $3.13 billion.

New Delhi: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairman and managing director of Biocon Limited, has hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his 'suit boot ki sarkar' comment calling it 'immature political tactics' and 'petty rhetoric' that was uncalled for.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly accused the government of working only for corporate leaders and not caring about the interest of farmers.
In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Ms Shaw says, "I think this is immature political tactics at a time when we need to focus on development. I do not agree with any of the things Rahul Gandhi has said. Let's not get into all this mud-slinging. I think using all this petty rhetoric, trying to take pot-shots at the Modi Government is uncalled for."
Ms Shaw said she is very disappointed with the congress for stalling key bills like GST and land acquisition termed it 'hypocrisy on part of the congress' and 'partisan politics' at its worst.
She said, "I think when Congress has embraced certain bills very very passionately, especially the GST bill, I don't understand why they would resist it with such fierce opposition."
Ms Shaw also accused the Congress of following an anti-development agenda.
"I think as a country we should put national interest ahead of everything else. And national interest today calls for development. I don't think the Congress is focused on poverty alleviation. They almost believe that the politics of poverty is the way they will get votes. And I think they need to think again."
Another top leader of corporate India, Adi Godrej has also expressed his disappointment with the congress for stalling bills... saying the opposition has put political considerations ahead of national interest.
Mr Godrej told NDTV, "I was particularly disappointed in the Congress' stand on the GST because they were for GST. They wanted to push the GST during the UPA regime. I was particularly disappointed with their behaviour in the Rajya Sabha on the last couple of days, making an issue of Nitin Gadkari's resignation, which I think was a very minor issue to hold back such a major economic issue for the country."
