| Pulses costlier by up to 64% in one year: Bucking the overall trend of easing inflation, pulses got costlier by up to 64 per cent in the first year of the Modi government across major metro cities, primarily due to fall in domestic production. Amid forecast of a poor monsoon for the second consecutive year, the government is considering importing pulses through state-owned trading firms such as MMTC to boost domestic supply and check the rise in retail prices. According to the data maintained by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the maximum increase in retail prices was witnessed in urad in the past one year, while tur, masoor, gram and moong dal prices have also shot up. One of the major achievements of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government -- which is completing its one year in office -- has been the inflation control during the period. As per the latest government data, the overall consumer price inflation dropped to its four-month low of 4.87 per cent in April, while wholesale price based inflation has been in the negative territory for six straight months. While inflation has eased in a number of food articles, the Consumer Affairs Ministry data showed that pulses have been getting costlier considerably, at least in the metro cities. | |

| Narendra Modi effective PM, over 72% satisfied with NDA's performance in first year, reveals survey New Delhi: It's been one year since Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India and a vast majority of Indians are happy with the Central government's work according to a survey conducted by Axis-My India. Modi took charge on May 26, 2014 promising a radical change in governance and ushering in 'acche din' (better days) for the people. To gauge the mood of the nation IBN carried out a survey where the sample size was over 20,000 people from 23 states covering 155 districts with a 70/30 rural-urban spread. Over 72% of those surveyed are satisfied with the Modi government in the last one year. The satisfaction is attributed to development, skillful governance and lower prices. Just 26% are dissatisfied with government for want of development and a little over 14% of the people attribute it to price rise. The majority says Modi is an effective Prime Minister and India’s image has improved globally. Below are the major survey findings:56% feel Narendra Modi is fast and an effective as Prime Minister. 13% say Modi is less work and more talk. For 15% he is slow and ineffective.
Over 6% say he has a clean image but is not a good administrator. Respondents largely feel the economy has looked up in the last one year.
61% say their economic conditions have improved. 63% say India’s economic situation too has improved. 55 per cent feel corruption has either come down or remained the same.
47% say inflation is down or has remained the same. 62% say jobs have gone up or at least remained same.
There are still concerns over job stagnation, rise in inflation and price rise.
There is confusion over the Land Acquisition Bill. While over 35% do not support the Land Bill, an equal number are undecided, leaving just 28% supporting the Bill. Whereas Clean India (Swachch Bharat) has appeal across the country, there is cautious response to other initiatives.
In fact an overwhelming 85% endorse Swachh Bharat as the best initiative and 76% endorse Jan Dhan Yojana as the second best initiative.
43% support Make In India and 42% say yes to Digital India. Mudra Bank and Smart City garner thr support of over a third respondents.
Mass media pips social media as Modi’s most effective communication too. While 30% feel Modi communicates effectively through radio (Man Ki Baat), 23% say Modi reaches out effectively to people through TV and just 20% say social media effective platform for Modi to communicate with only 17% feeling Modi reaches out best through public rallies. Only 4% say Modi reaches out effectively through interventions in Parliament.
Even as there is no clarity over RSS interference in government, but there is support for controlling fringe elements.
Only 32.64% disagree that there is interference while 32.35% feel RSS interferes in government functioning and 35% are undecided.
31.76% say Ghar Wapsi statements do not dent the government image but 34.59% are undecided on the issue. 33.65% say Ghar Wapsi comments dent Modi government image.
Over 43% say government should control those who make controversial statements but 26% disagree while 30% are undecided.Modi is the first Prime Minister in 30 years to lead a single-party majority government at the Centre although the Bharatiya Janata Party is heading a coalition called the National Democratic Alliance. | |

| Modi Underperforms Previous Leaders in His First Year on the Market [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The Wall Street Journal made with Datawrapper A year-ago, when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India, investors were optimistic he could become the most business-friendly prime minister India has ever known. These hopes pushed up stock prices but the Modi rally quickly lost momentum as the realities of running the world’s largest democracy set in. In terms of the Sensex performance under his watch, Prime Minister Modi has actually underperformed most previous prime ministers. During his first year in office, the benchmark index rose 13%. The Sensex did much better during Manmohan Singh’s first year–which started in 2004–when it jumped 31%. During the first year of P.V. Narasimha Rao it more than doubled. The only recent prime minister that received a worse review in terms of stock prices was the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee. During his first year-from March, 1998– the index fell 4%. Of course, no prime minister should be rated on how the volatile stock market does during his first year. It takes years to implement policies and there are many other factors that decide how well company earnings and stock prices perform in any given time period. Prime Minister Rao did so well because he took over in 1991 when India’s economy was about to collapse, said U.R. Bhat, managing director at Dalton Capital Advisors, a Mumbai-based money management firm. “The market rewarded him for successfully steering the economy out of that situation,” he said. Prime Minister Modi also inherited an economy that was struggling. Analysts say his gradual revamping of the economy has had a less dramatic effect on the market. “While ‘big-bang’ reforms were fewer, we sense that the government’s modus operandi in the first year was to accumulate low-hanging fruits with an increased focus on efficiency and removing hurdles for companies and enterprises to run a hassle-free profitable business,” PhillipCapital said in a note. | |

| Livemint Survey Modi had an approval rating of 74 percent in a survey done by Livemint, down from 82 percent last August. Giving the Modi government 7 out of 10 for its first year's performance, Assocham on Sunday had said it still needs to cover some ground on tax issues and a lot more needs to be done on improving ease of doing business, according to PTI. The industry body had said the country's macro-economic situation has improved in the past one year with decline in inflation, stability in currency and attractive financial markets. | |
