| Mischievous entries added to Nehru's Wiki page from govt IP: So, did the Narendra Modi government tweak details on Jawaharlal Nehru's Wikipedia page? According to a Times of India report, a software that tracks anonymous Wikipedia edits has found that mischievous changes were made to the entries on the country's first prime minister and his forefathers on June 26. The revisions, which originated from a government of India IP (Internet Protocol) address, said Nehru's grandfather Gangadhar Nehru was a Muslim. These edits were later deleted by volunteer editors of the online encyclopedia. The discovery was broadcast by @AnonGoIWPEdits - the Twitter handle of the software that was created by Pranesh Prakash. The malicious edits stated, "Gangadhar was born as a Muslim by the name of Ghiasuddin Ghazi but changed his name to a Hindu Ganga Dhar to escape British clutches." Similar edits were made on the pages of Ganga Dhar's son Motilal Nehru and grandson Jawaharlal. On the former PM's page, salacious details of his "affair" with Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of India's first governor general, Lord Mountbatten, were also added. | |

| Why did Sonia and Rahul sneak out just when Cong has BJP on the ropes A new Congress strategy has been visible in recent weeks. It is a simple and effective one. The strategy runs something like this: whenever there are corruption scams to be talked about, the Gandhi family will take the backseat, and possibly missing in action (MIA). When it comes to attacking the Modi Sarkar on ideological grounds (anti-poor, secularism), Sonia and Rahul will be at the forefront. Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul and daughter Priyanka sneaked out of the country before International Yoga Day for allegedly personal reasons. This is perfectly all right, but is it just coincidence that for the next two weeks, the Congress and the media have been in a feeding frenzy over scams involving all BJP states and the centre, the family is completely MIA? Sushma Swaraj has been under attack for abandoning normal ministry protocol to enable Lalit Modi to obtain British travel documents; Vasundhara Raje has been literally under siege daily for being a business partner of Lalit Modi in dubious circumstances; the Madhya Pradesh government has been on the backfoot over the Vyapam scam, which has seen many of the accused dying under unexplained circumstances; a couple of Maharashtra ministers – Pankaja Munde and Vinod Tawde – have been blasted for scams involving their ministries. In all these “scams”, no member of the Gandhi family has been at the forefront of accusations. They obviously timed their exit in such a way as to allow others to do the talking. The attacks on Vasundhara Raje have been orchestrated by Sachin Pilot and Jairam Ramesh; the attacks in Madhya Pradesh have been led by Digvijaya Singh and other low-level Congress flunkies. Even Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is related to Vasundhara Raje is MIA. The strategy behind this can only be speculated on, and this is what it looks like. The Gandhi family is missing in action because it makes for an easy target if either Sonia Gandhi or Rahul is seen to be leading the onslaught. Here’s possibly why. Sushma Swaraj’s help to “fugitive” Lalit Modi – the “fugitive” label being stuck on him by the media and the Congress purely on the basis of a couple of show cause notices issued by the Enforcement D irectorate - falls flat when compared to the kind of help the Gandhi family gave to its own pet fugitive, the late Ottavio Quattrochi, a key player in the Bofors payoff scandal. Quattrochi was Sonia Gandhi’s pal, and the UPA government not only did not chase him, but also allowed him to take his scam money and run. The UPA unfroze Quattrochi’s bank accounts, enabling him to take his scam-tainted money. If the Gandhis had taken on Swaraj themselves, the Quattrochi issue would surely have come up for discussion. Vasundhara Raje is being attacked by Sachin Pilot and not Rahul Gandhi for it immediately brings Robert Vadra’s own land-grab cases in Haryana and Rajasthan to the fore. In fact, a case involving Sonia’s and Rahul’s own property grab – the transfer of the Rs 5,000 crore Herald properties to their private trust using party money – is being heard in a Delhi court. Raje is being targeted by lesser fry in the Congress party in order to ensure that no bullets ricochet on the Gandhi family, which is vulnerable on this count. Exit from India for a couple of weeks also allowed the Gandhi family to avoid questions on the 40th anniversary of the 1975 internal emergency imposed by Sonia’s mother-in-law and Rahul’s grandmother, Indira Gandhi. In fact, most Congress flunkies also eased themselves out of the limelight during the week leading upto 25 June, and some, in fact, managed to claim that LK Advani’s interview to The Indian Express on the emergency was, in fact, about Narendra Modi’s authoritarian tendencies. Sonia and Rahul have never formally condemned Indira Gandhi’s emergency, seen as the biggest assault on democracy in independent India ever. It is more than likely that Sonia and Rahul will focus their attacks on the Modi government largely on the ideological front, where the NDA will be painted as anti-poor, pro-cronies, and anti-farmer. The Gandhis may not take the government directly on any scams, having just lost the last Lok Sabha elections for running India’s most corrupt government ever. The strategy seems to be working so far, with Rahul himself kicking off the plan by attacking the government as a “suit-boot-ki-sarkar” during the budget session of parliament. He has obviously touched a raw nerve in Modi’s psyche, for the Prime Minister has been trying to reinvent himself as a pro-poor politician in order to shift his party to the centre of the Indian political spectrum – away from its traditional right-wing orientation. Using the minions to have a go at the BJP on corruption is intended to keep the Gandhi family protected from the counter-fire. The Gandhi family went out of the country in mid-June even as the Congress party offered covering fire. Their prolonged absence has thus escaped media comment. | Congress may not know it but they're fighting a losing battle over Raje, Swaraj There's little doubt that the monsoon session of Parliament that begins on 21 July will be stormy one with the Congress continuing its attack on the BJP after the multiple controversies involving former IPL chairman Lalit Modi and BJP politicians. On Tuesday, the Congress for the second consecutive day attacked the Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje over her alleged dealings with Modi and claimed that she had illegally transferred holdings in the Dholpur palace hotel to the former IPL chief. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh claimed in Delhi that Hemant Singh, the estranged husband of Raje, had admitted before a court that the palace was the property of the Rajasthan government. Jairam Ramesh at the press conference on Tuesday. He told reporters that several revenue department documents between 1954 and 2010 showed that the palace was a government property but Raje and Lalit Modi's company has turned it into a "high end luxury hotel" and invested Rs 100 crore with no role of the state government. But while the Congress has promised to continue with the allegations day-on-day until the Rajasthan Chief Minister and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj resign, there are signs it's attack is flagging. The Times of India reports that the party has reached out to the BJP promising to let the Goods and Services Tax bill through the Rajya Sabha if the Rajasthan Chief Minister and External Affairs Minister are asked to vacate their positions. As support from other opposition parties remains in doubt, the Congress reportedly offered to walk out of the Rajya Sabha vote to allow the legislation to be passed. This comes even as the party has said that it will press for five changes to be incorporated in the bill, seen as a crucial one in the government's economic reform plan. The Congress took the decision to put forward the five demands during a conference of Congress Chief Ministers in New Delhi this month. Congress, which described the GST as its "own baby" forced the government to refer the Constitutional Amendment Bill for rolling out of GST to a Select Committee of Rajya Sabha in last session of Parliament. The Lok Sabha has already cleared the Bill. The BJP had already refused to consider any offer from the Congress that involves the two woman leaders quitting since it has no assurance that the Congress will honour its word in Parliament. Also given there was little chance that the legislation would be passed anyway, the latest offer from the Congress has also been dismissed by the BJP. And the BJP's decision to sit tight and weather the storm may just be paying dividends. When it comes to the Raje factor, not all Congress leaders share the conviction shown by senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. According to an Indian Express report, the party's leaders believe the focus should remain on Raje helping Modi stay in the UK when he was wanted by Indian authorities rather than the ownership of the palace that the party is focussing on. “We should have focused on the original issue… such disputes are there in many royal families. But what to do. There are some gentlemen in our party.” a Congress leader was quoted as saying in the report. And while the party may be divided over its attack on the Rajasthan Chief Minister, according to the report, the party has almost completely given up on its attack on Swaraj given its the one leader they can deal with in the Modi government. It also helps that she is seen as a potential political rival to the Prime Minister. As we pointed out earlier, the Congress was isolated when it came to its attack on Swaraj. While it has been pressing for her resignation, it has been perhaps the only voice vociferously demanding her resignation while the opposition decided to speak in different voices on the issue. With Raje as well, despite the opposition's demands, the BJP is unlikely to remove her as Chief Minister any time soon given that she's shown no intent of budging and still enjoys the support of the state unit. What this means is that the Congress campaign against both leaders while dominating headlines, may not result in anything. In Rajasthan, apart from the Congress, none of the other major opposition parties really have any interest and not been as active in the campaign to remove Raje from the chief minister's post. As Firstpost's G Pramod Kumar had pointed out, the Congress's attack has largely been aimless and the attack over the Dholpur palace, while dramatic and enough to disrupt Parliament, may yield little dividend. The Congress may attempt promising incentives like allowing the passage of the GST Bill, but with the BJP seeming to have decided to go toe-to-toe after having dulled the opposition's attack, it may not go anywhere. It's still some time long way off to 21 July, but unless Lalit Modi's Twitter gives them fresh ammunition against the government or they are able to sharpen their attack, the Congress may be fighting a losing battle against the Modi government. | |

| Congress Has Won, But Kerala By-poll Results Have Made BJP Smile THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first three-cornered by-poll of Kerala in Arruvikkara saw the BJP become a crucial player in the state, with a five-fold increase in votes it garnered. In the 2011 Assembly elections, the party had got just over 7000 votes across the state. But in Arruvikkara, despite losing, BJP state unit chief O Rajagopal got 34,000 votes -- a 23.96% vote share. Congress candidate KS Sabarinathan won the seat, defeating his nearest rival, the Left's M Vijayakumar, by a margin of more than 10,000 votes. "The BJP had given a very close contest to MP Shashi Tharoor even during the Lok Sabha elections," he said. "This by-poll too, shows its consistently growing influence among the electorate." In Kerala, elections are always seen as a political contest between the CPI(M)-led LDF and the Congress-led UDF. But the BJP has been making a push to expand its presence in the state, with the party's biggest faces taking part in rallies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed rallies there ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and party president Amit Shah had taken part in protests in Thiruvanthapuram recently. Mr Rajagopal, 85, said it was heartening that despite UDF's win, nearly 80,000 people have voted against the government in favour of either LDF or BJP. | In Madhya Pradesh, BJP Wins By-Election, Holds On to Garoth Seat With considerable ease, the ruling BJP has defeated the Congress in an important by-election in Madhya Pradesh at a time when the government is accused of a major corruption scam by the Opposition. The BJP's Chander Singh Sisodia defeated Congress candidate Subhash Sajotiya by nearly 14,000 votes in the by-election for the assembly seat of Garoth in the western part of the state. In March, the BJP's Rajesh Yadav, the legislator from here, passed away. Voting was held on Saturday. The victory for the BJP comes as Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, now in his third term is confronting allegations of the involvement of top party leaders and government officers in a scam which saw hired imposters taking the exams for entrance to educational institutions and recruitment to government jobs. 25 linked to | |

| 3 passengers offloaded to make way for minister Rijiju and his aide in AI flight
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was at the centre of a controversy for delaying an Air India flight from Leh to Delhi for about an hour and for offloading three of its passengers, including a child, allegedly to accommodate him and his aide. According to sources, the aircraft doors were shut for takeoff on June 24 but the flight did not depart at its scheduled time as Rijiju, along with his PA, had to be onboard. When he arrived, three passengers were allegedly deboarded to accommodate the minister and his PA, sources said. While an Air India spokesman said it has sought more details on the incident, Rijuju claimed it was not a "delay" as the departure of the flight was "preponed" due to technical reasons. "The departure was at 1140 hrs... I don't know... somehow there was a rescheduling issue... It was not a delay… it was a communication gap," Rijiju said. Rijiju said that he was returning to Delhi after taking part in the "Sindhu Darshan" festival on June 24 along with Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh in an Air India flight which was "suddenly rescheduled." "I was supposed to return from Leh in a helicopter. But due to bad weather, the helicopter could not come from Srinagar to take me from Leh. Then the Jammu and Kashmir Deputy chief minister asked me to accompany him in the Air India flight which was supposed to depart at 11.40 am. "But to our utter surprise, when we reached the Leh airport at 10.20 am, we found that the door of the aircraft was closed and it was about to take off. Then the deputy chief minister lodged a strong protest with the civil aviation minister for the unannounced rescheduling of the aircraft," Rijiju said. He said that after sometime, he and Singh were allowed to board the plane "and we could fly." Asked whether three passengers were made to deboard the flight to accommodate him, Rijiju said he was not aware of any such thing. "I am totally unaware whether anyone was asked to deboard. If it was done, it is completely wrong and unacceptable," he said.

"Have apologised to the family for the inconvenience," said Singh. A huge row has erupted after it emerged that a family of three were off loaded to accommodate Kiren Rijiju and Nirmal Singh.
