| an interesting comment What is the point in telecasting Clean India (Swaccha Bharat) campaign video in Hindi in all the South Indian language TV channels (Kannada / Tamil / Malayalam etc)? If the intent is reaching out to the masses, it should be in their native languages. When the I & B Ministry can spend huge sums for buying air time for these ads, can't they spend a miniscule portion of it for doing voice over in the other languages, or at least put sub titles? Even Fair Cream advertisements show this linguistic sensibility. | |

| Photographer accuses PM Narendra Modi’s social team of stealing his photoIn what can be termed a copyright infringement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official Facebook account has allegedly used a photograph of a US-based photographer to wish people on Dhanteras without attributing it to him. The photo belongs to Boston-based photographer Bimal Nepal, who has apparently worked for the National Geographic and Harvard Media among others. Although slightly modified from the original photo, the photo post read: “Greetings on Dhanteras. May Lord Dhanvantari bless us with prosperity, joy and good health.” [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The post on Modi’s Facebook page. Unhappy with the use of his photograph, Nepal wrote a message on his Facebook page saying he was honoured, but was concerned that neither his permission was sought not credit attributed to him. To prove his point, he uploaded the original photo along with the edited version used on Modi’s greeting post. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Bimal Nepal put up his original phot (left) with the edited one on Modi’s page (right). Nepal wrote on his page: “This photograph has been used by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Facebook page. I shot this photo in my dining room last year with the help of my daughter Abina. She set up the candle lights on Diwali in our home in Cambridge Massachusetts. I am truly honored! My greatest question and concern is – there is no credit for the photographer?! What will happen so called copyright issue? He did not ask for the permission. Any suggestion?” [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Bimal Nepal’s original image: (Source: Photo by Bimal Nepal, Facebook) After the incident, the photographer changed the cover photo of his Facebook page with the original image. Despite notifying the Prime Minister’s Facebook page of the infringement, Modi’s Facebook page has not issued any apology nor given credits to Bimal Nepal. | |

| Happy Diwali From Icy Heights of Siachen,' PM Modi Wishes President SIACHEN: On Diwali Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a packed visit to Jammu and Kashmir with a rare trip to Siachen, the world's highest battlefield, to rally the morale of troops after border clashes with Pakistan. From there he wished President Pranab Mukherjee, saying, "From the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier & with the brave Jawans & Officers of the Armed Forces, I wish all of you a Happy Diwali." This morning, he said he was carrying a message for soldiers from "each and every Indian", that "we stand shoulder to shoulder with you!" PM Modi took a special Indian Air Force aircraft to Siachen and was flown by helicopter to the base camp at about 12,000 feet. He made an aerial survey of the glacier before meeting Indian troops. Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhaag accompanied him. Mr Modi is the first prime minister to visit Siachen in 10 years; Dr Manmohan Singh, who was prime minister for 10 years, was the last to visit the glacier in 2005. The visit is being seen as a strong message to Pakistan, which has been pressing for the pullout of troops from the glacier since 2012, when 130 Pakistani soldiers died in an avalanche on their side of the slopes. India has been opposing the demand given the strategic importance of the glacier. This is the 30th year of the Siachen conflict; the army has been posted at the 71-km glacier since 1984. In a series of tweets, PM Modi paid tribute to thousands of soldiers, who, he said, stand firm, serving the nation in most severe conditions. "Be it the altitude or bitter cold, nothing deters our soldiers. They stand there, serving our Nation. They make us truly proud," he said on Twitter. "Everyone is aware of the extreme conditions at Siachen. Overcoming every challenge our soldiers stand firm," he added. At least 20 people have died on both sides of the border in firing earlier this month. Later today, the Prime Minister will visit Srinagar, which was devastated by floods last month, the worst the state has seen in 100 years. He is expected to meet the families that were worst affected and also review relief and rehabilitation measures. | |

Centre clears 370-acre forest land for Adani’s Gondia power project[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Order lifting reservation on the land issued on Monday after a six-year wait. The state has ordered 148.59 hectares of forest land in Gondia district, Vidarbha to be "diverted" for the construction of a 1980 megawatt (MW) coal-based thermal power plant run by the Adani Group. The tract was identified for the project by the Ahmedabadbased conglomerate in 2008, but final permissions were granted by the Narendra Modiled National Democratic Alliance on August 28 this year. Following this decree, the state Forest Department issued an order, on October 20, mandating that the land be set aside for the power plant. Mumbai Mirror has reviewed copies of both documents. "The proposal with scrutiny and recommendation was sent by the state to the centre. The net present value of the plot was also paid and the money for afforestation was given to the state. The Central government cleared the project, after which we issued orders for diversion of forest land," Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest Suresh Gairola, who is a nodal officer for clearances to mega projects, told Mumbai Mirror. A forest department official said the Adani Group, which has interests in energy, logistics and mineral resources, operates an existing power plant of 3300 MW capacity in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) sector of Tiroda, Gondia, about 1,000 km to the north east of Mumbai. "They wanted to expand this plant and after searching for land, they found a 148.59 hectares parcel in Tiroda tehsil," the official said. Acertificate issued by the Collector of Gondia on June 14, 2008, which is included in a sheaf of documents pertaining to the power project, states that "all other alternatives for a thermal power plant had been explored and there is no alternative non-forest land available for the purpose". The Collector determined that parcels in Gorada, Mendipur, Kachewani and Khairbadi villages, taken together would meet the needs of Adani Power Projects, an ancillary concern of the Group (its Energy division comprises Adani Infrastructure, Adani Gas and Adani Power Projects). The correspondence also reveals that the energy major paid the "net present value" of the plot and also took care of financial requisites for compensatory afforestation (the planting of trees to make up for culled forest land as mandated by the compensatory afforestation fund management and planning authority). The Forest Advisory committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) granted the project in-principle approval on December 9, 2011. Final permissions were issued by the Ministry on August 29, 2014. The letter from the Assistant Inspector General, MoEF, M Rajkumar to Principal Secretary (Forests) Maharashtra Pravensinh Pardeshi, dated August 29, 2014, stipulates 17 conditions to be met by Adani Power Projects before the project takes root. These prerequisites include the development of a green belt along the power station and along water channels located in the plant, a restoration plan for wildlife corridors and "proper mitigative measures to minimise the soil erosion and choking of streams". Forest officials told Mirror that the state government submitted its first compliance reports to the MoEF on May 30, 2012 and September 25, 2012. However, the final compliance statement was only issued two years later, on July 16. Following this communique, the MoEF directed the state to set aside forest land for the project. As the model code of conduct was in force in Maharashtra ahead of the assembly polls, the forest department issued orders on October 20, after election results were declared. In response to a question about the delay in acquiring permissions for the power plant, Ajit Barodia, Vice President (Corporate Affairs) of Adani group said, "We can't say it (the approval mechanism) was 'stuck'. The government follows a process." When asked if Adani Power Projects had received official word from the government, he said, "Permission was in process. We may have got it." He redirected all further queries to a company spokesperson, who did not respond to a set of emailed questions. vadraye thookki kollanam | |
